New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Just thought i would share the van i just picked up with you guys. The front axle has been flipped. Im planning on doing the rear also. Have to figure out the bump steer issue in the front of the van. Modify the tierod i guess. I also need to round up a bunch of odds and ends that are missing, but i have my ways for that. Unless there is someone in the NW that has parts lying around. Anyways. Im new to the van scene, been into hotrods since birth it seems. Always wanted an early chev van... here she is....

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
It looks like a 66 SportVan,,,,,,,,is it a Custom or Deluxe? Does it have the step under the side doors? Does it have the battery under the passenger seat?

Welcome:
Nice metal, I can't figure why someone would strip a van with that good of a body on it.
before commenting on model, what is or was in the interior? does the floor have provisiond for original back seats?
You are going to need pop out windows for it. Those stright bumpers are hard to get.

Don this could be like my van, No belt line moulding, no tail light trim, pop out windows. Mine never had seats or inside pannels ever installed. Mine is called just a "Chevyvan" and has 15 windows

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Not sure if it was ever anyones intention to "strip" it. I think parts just got lost in the change of hands. It appears to have had two rear seats, I have the forward of the two. I have all the pop out windows. Just have to put some new weatherstripping in and put them back in. It doesn't have any interior paneling. And the body isn't nearly as nice as the pictures show. The nose it pretty beat up, and the roof is an ocean from caving in from a snow load in Spokane. Thankfully though the body is very solid and almost rust free. The vin on mine is G1268 if that tells anyone anything.

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Those SportVans came in 3 flavors,,,,,,SportVan, Custom, and Deluxe,,,,so it looks like you have the basic model,,,,,,so you are on your way getting to know what you got,,,,,,,,and that VIN probably says G1266P ,,,,,,do you have the 6 cylinder and 3 speed still in it?

Welcome to the site Vango66, looks like you have the economy model Sportvan (still cool). You do have something most Sportvan's don't have any more is the 2 back seats. A lot of guy are looking for them

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Don mine is a G125
inported form the USA, the stamped 233 into the plate is the CND customs file number.
Van go66: if you have an original 1st gen rear seat its worth its weight in gold. Look at your floor, does it have the factory attachments for the rear seats?
like on this one
this floor does not have them

yep she has all the mounts for the seats. Are the seats different from front to back. The one i have seems to position itself better over the front set of mounts.

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
M1D,,,,,,,your van was the 14, 152 Chevy Van built in 1965,,,,,,,,,,mine was the 6,000,,,,,,,But mine is an Early 65' with the 1964 body and the 5 slot grille. Sooooo,,,,,,,,I would have to say you got one of the 1st Sportvan bodys,,,,,,,,,, ( this could be one of those conversions that Dan talked about) but your Vin says panel,,,,you probably don't have the step or pop out windows or the battery under the passenger seat like a real Sportvan has,,,,,,your van just happened to be built right when they ran out of 1964 bodies and before they started building the 6 slot bodies and Sportvans,,,,I would have to say the SportVans came in 3 flavors,,,,,SportVan,,,SportVan Custom and SportVan Deluxe......we need VanAgain here to tell us the difference between the 3,,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,and Van go66,,,,,,,I would say they use a smaller seat in the middle so you can walk around it to get to the longer back seat,,,,,,,

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Don my van cannot be one that got the dealer installed windows. My window frames on the outer pannels are dye stamped frames. I have pop out windos but believe they wer installed afterwards because the factory installed pop out windos have an extra piece of metal spot welded onto the frame to suport the latch mechanism and mine has wood blocks added there.
My van was deffinetly manufactured as a full window van at the plant but nothing else that sport vans com with. I realise its numbered as a pannel but there is no way my windows were dealer installed.
It sounds like a bit of an oddity but I have seen two other vans just like mine.

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
I would say yours is a factory model,,,,,,that got stuck with a Sportvan body,,,,,,,and non of the SportVan accessories,,,,,,who knows why this happened and there sure are more like yours,,,,,,did someone want a panel with windows????? did someone order the conversion kit????? did GM put these out before they had all the SportVan accessories ready??? Did they run out of 1964 bodies and only had these SportVan bodies on hand to supply their orders???? Sounds like Dan Van Man needs to find us an answer,,,,,,,

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
My old 66 was a sportvan custom. The 'custom' included stuff base sportvans do not have such as chrome bumpers, fiberglass interior trim around the windows, chrome horn ring, two tone paint, etc. The deluxe has everything a custom has plus the stainless trim around the beltline, along with (sometimes) a dash pad and nicer seat upholstery and upholstered front door panels, stainless tail light trim, etc.
VanGo66, I'm parting out a '65 sportvan (base sportvan) so if you need anything for yours, let me know and maybe I can help.

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
My Vangoodies!!! Hit up a local spot for vintage tin and nabbed a nice pile of goods.
Some cool side mirrors off a Handivan, defrost vents with deflectors, sidestep linkage, BATTERY BOX COVER, air cleaner, FRONT BOWTIE, engine crossmember, and antena not show. few other bits and pieces.
Im goin back after she is a driver for the roof and entire front sheet metal for my van. Snow took a toll on my roof and i think a snowbank punched her in the nose. totally happy with the parts that i did get.
Ill let you know if i need anything else Kooky
Heres some shot of the vans I pilfered.

Re: New Guy...Old Box O Windows
Nice score! You got some good, hard to find stuff there. The famous defroster diverters (which way are those things supposed to point, anyway?), the step linkage, and those mirror mounts are very sought after.
I remember finding an air cleaner for my first van in the back of a junker. I'd never seen a stock one before and didn't even know what it was at first! What does the label on yours say?
