    Engine Identification Empty Engine Identification

Post by wideload Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:32 pm

I know someone here can identify the engine in my 65. Its a small block chevy (pretty sure it's a 283) but have no idea what year model.

These numbers are stamped in the block on a flat just below the front of the passenger side head.

    F O I 2 7 D

If Im reading this right that code line says Flint Jan 27 D=283 but it might be a real old one, have to use casting numbers to determine the year for sure I think, heres where I got this info http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-4.php

Thanks Digz. I'll see if I can get the casting #'s tomorrow.

According to this page it could be a '58 or a '60

Located the casting # this morning.

    GM
    3756519

    This number

    17

is located to the left of the above numbers and is turned 90 degrees.

    Engine Identification 100_3518

According to the info I've seen on the links above in this post the F in the stamped #(F0I27D) means it was built in Flint, the D at the end of the stamped # means it's either a 1958 or a 1960 - 283ci.

    The cast # indicates that it's a 1958-1962 283ci.

None of the info seems to make any since to me regarding the remaining digits. The third digit in the stamped # is definitely an I not a 1 and the 17 that's cast next to the GM number has no other digits to go with it.

At least I know more now than I did.

    Thanks for the help guys!!!!!!!
