Post by Keith D Sun Oct 10, 2021 7:14 pm

OK... I know this is not rocket science but for some reason it is smarted that I am.

Today I wanted to complete a small project on the van. So I figured that I would install the new glove box liner and the glove box door. An easy 30 minute job, that so far has taken me 2.5 hours and I still don't have it right.

The problem is when the door is opened it lightly rubs the dash about a 1/2 inch in from the left corner. The door will open but it rubs enough to nick the paint on the dash.

There is no adjustment in the hinges that I can see, I have tried shimming the hinges on one side, then the other side and also both sides together. The only thing that did was to mess up the gap on top. I thought I'd better walk away from it as I was having thoughts of getting my biggest hammer and smashing the s**t out of it.

Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about, sorry they are kind of dark as for some reason my phones flash was not working (it's been that kind of a day).

    Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Also what keeps the glove box door from coming open when you hit a bump? I can't seem to figure that one out either.

Yep... I'm wondering if the door is a little bend? I can't see any warpage but maybe just slightly?

I can't think of anything else as I said before there doesn't seem to be any adjustment any ware in the door hinges.

I have not found anything wrong with the door but I'm thinking there must be. If anyone has a glove box door in good shape please let me know.

    Thanks...

Is it possible that your left hinge is bent or deformed?  It seems to be fine when it is closed but rubs as you open it.  Maybe it was "tweaked" while it was open, bending the hinge.  The curve in the hinge is supposed to pivot the door out and away from the dash.
    JM2C, YMMV.

OK, I'll admit not having a Dodge I might've been shooting in the dark. Is it possible to loosen the screws on the left one and move it forward a bit? I'm really just grasping at straws. Hope it helps even if it just causes you to figure it out. The alignment when it's closed looks good (as you stated). That makes me think it is something else. Good luck.

PS. I had another look at the full picture of the alignment when it's closed. It looks like the left end gap is tighter than the right. I don't know if that is a clue or not.

There is absolutely no adjustment in the hinges, the screw holes that the bolts go thru for the hinges are just big enough for the bolt, they are not slotted.

I would try folding a rag and placing it in the gap next to the hinge on that left corner and close the door against it. That might give you just enough clearance? Be careful of the top of door when closing, it might also raise it up as it pushes the bottom out.

I had tried basically what you two had suggested earlier when I was trying to fix it on the first day that I was working on it.

I took the door off again today and laid a flat edge across it and it is straight, no warpage. I can't see anything wrong with the door. The dash is spot on also, this is a head scratcher.

I eagerly await another door to see if that fixes the problem, if it doesn't I will be really be confused.

    Again thanks Dix !!!

I don't have a Dodge either but when I look at this pic, is it just my eyes or does it look like that line from left to right starts higher and goes down lower on the right side???

It almost looks like the verticle bar piece on the right side of the pic maybe should have a matching verticle bar on the left side to match it...

Can someone with a Dodge take a pic of their glovebox door from the same angle to see if anything looks different? Just a thought... What a Face

I'd say both dor, & hinge bent. U say the dor is OK?

    I'd man-handle it ! (just what they say never do) ;^ )
Take plastic dor'n trim tool, close dor, notice thinest gap, pry there. It may even close up the latch prob above simultaneously. On mine I'd just doit w/a screw driver (asa pry bar). No concern w/paint 8^ 0

Not sure if on face or back I bet the dor was twequed @ same time. Some1 simply put weight on it (open, they fell? rested a huge weight onit?) who nos. Get a known plain surface (I use machinist table) and ck dor by frnt then flip & ck back. I think it's not flat any more. Place hi side up, several sheets of cardboard below. Place heal of hand strategically, press dwn. The card board protects paint (& more importantly) allows dor to flex beyond normal (flat) as that is needed to get it TO normal again. U can not get metal to go back where it needs by putting it THERE. It must go a lill beyond and that will return to 'normal' Comprende`?

Good Luck, thnx 4 askin us~

Thanks everyone for the input, the consensus is that the door is tweaked a little.

I have a different door coming soon as I believe that it must be tweaked also. Instead of trying to get mine right I'm going with a different door as the easier fix.

No matter what I will have to paint it, a different door or if I bend mine.

I will let you know what I find.

Speaking of flimsy, the cardboard glovebox liner. I ran across a picture (sorry for the poor quality I captured it off of YouTube) of a plastic glove box liner.

Looks a little homemade but not sure, has anyone heard of a plastic glovebox for the A100 ?

There are a couple of members on this site who have fabricated metal ones for theirs. Donivan and Russell. Chevy vans but the process would be similar. Use the search tab at the top of the page to search for glovebox and you might find a few threads on the subject.

I like it... You did a good job.

I like the liner that you put inside, keeps things from sliding around, keeps them from rattling, and scratching the glovebox.

I saw this glove box lid a while back online.., Someone has a lot of talent.
