Oil Capacity for 65' Panel Empty Oil Capacity for 65' Panel

Post by Guest Sun Jun 21, 2009 8:55 pm

    Hi guys,
Been lurking for quite a while. Picked up a 1/2 ton 65' Chevy panel van and am going thru it step by step. When I bought it, I drove it home but it smoked pretty bad. Thought it was the PCV valve as smoke was coming out the valve cover breather, but it seemed ok running wise (although I changed it out being it was $1.99). I then checked the oil and the dipstick had it about 1 inch or more above the full level. Not sure I have the right dipstick or it's just WAY too much oil (which would make sense on the smoke from the breather cap), but does anyone know the specs on my 230 (I think it is a 230 and not a 194??) for how many quarts of oil???? Then I can see when I change it out if the dipstick is right and was just overfilled.... (sorry for the long explanation, just new to the vannin gig, but LOVIN IT!!!!! Thanks!

The dipstick goes down 10 1/2",,,,Full is at 9" mark. and capacity depends on if you use the short PH 30 filter or the long PH 13 one,,,,,

Thanks! Hey does anyone have any quick reference to these motors? I'm looking for timing, gaps, vavle adjustment, carb. stuff, etc..... Anyone have a quick reference or site they can send me too. I've got no manual or anything for this motor/van and can't seem to find it on the internet so far.

But the most important check would be to smell the oil on the dipstick,,,,,if it smells from gas,,,,the diaphram in the fuel pump is leaking gas into the oil pan and you are sitting next to a bomb.....

I believe so. Will check my Truck Manual when I get home. Unless Don awakens and post before I get you the info.

These are the Official books for 1964 and 1965 Chevy Vans,,,,,,they used the pick up book and added the supplement to cover van stuff that was not in the pick up book. I would put in 4 quarts of oil and check the dipstick,,,,,it uses 4 1/2 to 5 quarts depending on what oil filter you use,,,,,,
