My 240 Seized, What To Do? Empty My 240 Seized, What To Do?

Post by Udo Tue Jul 30, 2019 2:05 pm

So my head gasket must have been leaking and when I went to start up the truck this spring it wouldn't.
I tore the head off and sure enough antifreeze got into the engine and 2 of the cylinders have rust along with a lot of ethylene in the oil pan. Sad
What was worse is whomever owned the vehicle before me somehow lost the tip of a screwdriver in the last cylinder and that was bouncing around in there the entire time I have owned it....the piston head is not happy lol.

2800 bucks to rebuild this engine so what are your suggestions?
Should I look for a 300 EFI engine to toss in there, rebuild, or get something else that will mate up to the existing tranny?
It's a 66 so it has the 9" HD rear on it.
    Thanks as always guys.

a 300 is a stroked 240 so no difference on bell (all sbf - any bent8 tranny fits).
Some go w/the 300 (plenty avail compaired to the 240) but efi so as to have the relibility, low maintence and pep. There's some ins'n outs to the swap...
I get my help frm ford6. They specialize on the motor (actually all 6 Thrift Powers frm 1960 - '96)

I second the 300. If you can find a good carbed version, everything on your 240 will bolt up. Drop right in as a straight replacement. The EFI versions of the 300 are not quite so easy, but can work. The Fordsix forum is a great resource.

    OK groovy, thanks gents.
Will check over there as well.
I could use my 240 head on the 300 for higher compression too, yeah?

Higher compression on the 240 head versus the 300

I would definitely go with a 300. I don't know how it is in Canada, but down here you can get a long block with a great warranty from someplace like S&J in Spokane for less than rebuilding your core.

Oh yeah, even after the exchange rate its cheaper.
I could go down and pick it up via the Coho to Port Angeles.

I assume I would need this one?

It's around $2K US after shipping, core refund ect. Yeah, but look into it. I was going pick up a 79 200 from a guy a few months ago outside of Vancouver and stopped in to ask the local border guys here in town if I would encounter any problems. Long story short, he thought no problem, but after a couple calls they wanted me to do an official entry with it, needed a broker ect. It wasn't worth it. I think they were wrong b/c of the vintage and the fact that it was likely manufactured here but that doesn't matter, it's what they think or more what the specific agent thinks. Just beware. If you want to do it, I'd call S and J and see what they think. I'm sure they've run into this situation. Otherwise any good running carbed 300 will do for you. If you get something(complete) from the mid-late 70's or later it will have DSII ignition, ect.

On a side note I looked at Canadian Tire and Napa Canada sites trying to get the price for a long block in Victoria and they had no listing. I thought that was weird. Like no one replaces engines in Canada. Maybe you have to go in and find out?

Yeah I spoke to em today via chat and they will ship the engine to me for $350 USD...I will have to pay the 250 block fee since I cannot bring mine in.
I will need a new intake manifold since mine has a crack in it as well but the shipping will be close to what it will cost me in ferry, gas, possible hotel, etc.
My valve cover, Carter carb, etc will fit right on it.
$2800 plus labour to rebuild my 240 here in Vic so this 300 is way cheaper.

If you get a new engine you should get a reman DSII distributor and break it in with that. Put some moly paste on the dist gear so it and the cam gear mate well. Perfect time to do it. Forum member jdlaugh might have some insight on what intake to go with that fits other than the stock 1v type unit. It'd also be a great time to go with a holley sniper type setup, or plan for it.

Yikes that Holly set up is another $1000US plus the DSII.
The engine alone is gonna hurt, dunno if I will want to slap that much more into it.
This truck is just a weekend and random day driver, not my daily.
The new engine will breathe some life back into it but eventually I think I want an old 50 Metro Harvester van.

I just saw one of those old Metro's here in town yesterday. I always liked the deco look of those vans. Probably here for the arts fest this weekend.

Yeah a DSII is definitely doable.
Those Metro's are killer, I would rat rod it and put air suspension in it for sure.
Great delivery van for my hot sauce would be the plan.
