Well, they sure don't make them like this anymore.
Dodge introduced the A100 line of compact trucks and vans in 1964. These unibody utility vehicles were mostly configured as panel, cargo and passenger vans. The pickup versions were certainly rarer and even more so when equipped with a powerful V8 engine. The A100 Pickups have become prized among hot rodders and collectors.
This 1969 A100 is a hard loaded example featuring the Mopar LA series small block 318 cubic inch V8 engine that has received a warmover including what sounds like a mild cam, 4-barrel carb, headers and a muscular exhaust note out of dual side exit pipes. With creature comforts like the LoadFlite A727 3-speed automatic transmission with its totally cool dash mounted gear selector, optional arm rest door trim and beautiful dual chrome western style side view mirrors. The interior has been trimmed nicely with great looking fabric seat inserts. The attractive two tone paint scheme gives the truck boulevard cred and a bit of sophistication to compliment its intended blue collar purpose.
This truck has a few tasteful mods including bumper delete and great looking period correct Cragar wheels on performance radials. At some time in its storied past this truck did some heavy lifting, likely for an auto shop, evidenced by the custom hydraulic telescoping hoist. Finally, the R/T gas cap is a nod to the performance lurking in this mild custom cab over!
Chrysler coined "Forward Control" to describe the cab over front axle driving position. Whatever you decide to call it translates into fun. It's a hoot to operate this quick and maneuverable vehicle seated ahead of the front wheels. The motor is responsive and will light up the rear tires with ease and deliver satisfying second gear chirps on demand. The unassisted steering and brakes are old school but still quite manageable. The truck starts up easy; idles steady. It rolls down the road smoothly, steers and stops without drama. Its also pretty useful with a large bed area and wide tailgate.
Cab over trucks became a competitive initiative for American car manufacturers, largely in response to the Volkswagen Transporter. But like we Americans were fond of doing, we left the little 4-bangers in the parts bin in favor of torquey six cylinders and in short order stuffed them with legendary V8 American muscle. Cab over light trucks were a relatively short lived automotive design for reasons that had little to do with the cool factor that makes them so collectible today.
This truck is not in perfect show car condition and has been driven regularly since its restoration. What it is, is as high a quality driver as you will find. A truck that can hold its own in any local car show, haul your stuff around, draw thumbs up everywhere you go and keep a smile on your face whether you are driving it or just looking at it.
