I'm considering buying this '65 Sportvan in New York. Comments please!!!

Hi all, been lurking for while, and then I wanted to buy a Toyota Rv. Now I'm back and want to turn this Sportvan into a camper of sorts. It's been posted on this site for awhile and listed and unsold on Ebay THREE TIMES. He will take under $3000 now. He just did the brakes and said he rivited in a piece of metal for the holes in the cab floor. I am going to go see it next week. Any comments on this vehicle? Has anyone actually gone to see it? And very important, what might it need to make reliable? He says it has hardened valve seats installed, too. There is a missing rusted piece under the driver's side door in front. Is this piece available aftermarket? How about window seals? It needs a rear tag light housing. My idea was to not restore it more than necessary to make it reliable. For new paint, I was thinking digital comoflage or some such that is low cost. There has been new panels installed on the rockers and those areas need more work.  Any and all all comments would be super. Thanks!

Just my opinion but my main concern would be the rust issues. The drip rails seem to have quite a bit of rust and the floor boards as well. I would look underneath at the frame to make sure the frame looks solid and doesn't have rot through. Just riveting metal over rust doesn't resolve the rust issue because unless the rust is cut out completely, it's just going to continue eating away at the surrounding metal. If you have metal skills or know someone who does, it may not scare you away...However, if you don't, it can get quite expensive to have it fixed the "right" way.
I would look it over carefully and decide whether you have the skills or the money it will take to fix the rust issues. You can buy new window seals and there are some replacement metal pieces available. If you go to the "G Parts Links" section of the Forum, you can find many of the replacement parts links available. Hope this helps a little...

i agree i would def be aware of the rust issues, it looks like some rust repair has been started and if its anything like my van thats not necessarily a great thing if it was fixed poorly. My van had some rust issues and as i started to repair i found many poorly fixed areas that i had to redo, hard to say from pictures but my van didn't look bad at first glance and I'm easy 200+ hours into sheetmetal repair and only 3/4 of the way done. A little rust goes a long way
