Well, here goes. I'm just going to put this thing together with the parts it came with and fix what needs fixing. I got started today by going through all the parts and trying to figure out where they all go. I put the emblems on the outside and started installing the trim panels on the interior. Here's some pic's.

The upholstered panels are in pretty good shape but the driver side window trim panel is broken off behind the seat. I'll be looking for one of those.

Both back seats are original vinyl and decent condition.
    Samsvans '66 Sportvan Deluxe 00311
Horn ring intact, original dash pad and look at that floor!
    Samsvans '66 Sportvan Deluxe 00411
    LOOK AT IT!!!

Front seats are re-upholstered already. Nice job.

And there's the roof vent. My head hurts just looking up there.

Well Joe, I spoke too soon about the horn ring. It was JB welded together. Sad Oh well. I picked up the gas tank today. All cleaned and sealed. The new rad and all my trim clips will be here next week so it should be ready to roll soon after. I'll get some pic's of the progress tomorrow.

Wow, not even missing the brake cover floor plug! Did the handle fit?  Find a nice pop up sunroof to replace the hatch-job like one of these:

Not much happened over the weekend except for a lot of hamburger eating and beer drinking. I did manage to get the gas tank and new sending unit wire in but that's about it. The radiator came in today so I'll install it tomorrow and hopefully take it for a drive. Thanks for the handle Vantasia. I'm waiting on the keyed lock cylinder that Joe sent so I can get it re-keyed. The only thing I don't like about the sunroof is that I have the headliner spar thing that goes right across the opening that's there. For originalitys sake, I think patching the hole is what I should do. I do have a question that I'll post on the general discussion thread..
I'll get some pic's when I get it out of the barn.

I bought that Champion radiator that Doni suggested and made some aluminum angles to mount it to the stock support. Went in nice and so I tried to take it for a drive. No problems with the plumbing but the van runs like crap. It has one of those HEI distributors in it so I searched this site for info about any problems associated with them. It looks like I'm having the same issues that other people have had. When I give it gas, it acts like it's flooding out. I'm no mechanic so all the information about timing advance, vacuum and everything else is a little over my head. Is this a problem that most shops should be able to figure out? Anyway, here's some pictures.

I still say thats one "Sweet" looking Sportsvan Radiator looks & fits Great..!!!..Usually those HEI's are bolt in set it and forget about it most likley IMO you might have some trash in the carburetor from sitting around see if someone local could install a rebuild kit and clean it out may be all that needs to be done but wait for someone with a little more knowlege to chime in but I think the carb might be next was there trash in the gas tank when they cleaned it out and relined it because it will eventually all wind up in the carb..!!!,,,JMO..

That be a ground strap. Attach to motor or body. I usually ground the motor the body and what ever else I think should have a ground wire, especially if there is tar or any kind of insulation, rubber between the instrument and the grounded surface it attaches to (frame, Motor, Dash)...lol. Can't have enough ground wires. If battery is grounded to frame then attach to frame.

I have the positive battery cable running to the starter and negative cable on the engine block. From there I have a thick ground strap from the motor to the frame/body.

Well, the work on my other van is going great- probably because someone else is doing it Rolling Eyes  This thing, on the other hand, is kicking my ass (that's where my wallet is). It's still not running good. I installed a brand new Daytona carb, had a real mechanic adjust it and the timing and bought new plugs specifically for this motor with the HEI, or so the guy at NAPA says. Now it idles fine and when I get on it it goes like hell but when I first start to accelerate, it sputters and bogs really bad. The mechanic said he thought he could hear a vacuum leak around the intake. Does that sound like it could be the problem? I realize it's pretty hard to diagnose a problem like this from a computer but if a crack or bad gasket in the intake could cause this, I have a spare intake and exhaust manifold from my GMC that I could swap. The van even came with a whole gasket set.
Otherwise, all the seats and seat belts are in it and I found the trim clips I needed to put the chrome trim on the outside so that's done. It has the hazard flasher and the coat hooks and the front seat belts are three point. I didn't even know they made those then. I'll get a couple more pic's tomorrow.

all you =or? any decent mechanic needs to do is spray some carb cleaner / wd40 on the intake gasket area or intake ( while running!!) to see if engine runs better?? That will determine if the gasket is bad or if anything near it needs attention!! Twisted Evil cheers

So, tested for vacuum leak and couldn't really tell but I just assumed there had to be one somewhere. I pulled the intake and exhaust manifolds and saw that when the p.o.'s mechanic rebuilt the motor, he painted the head in between where the manifolds attach and slopped that blue silicone all over both sides of the new gasket before installation. The gasket in between the intake and exhaust was toast too. I cleaned everything and installed new gaskets and it ran great. So I drove a couple miles to show a guy I had it fixed. Then when I cranked it up and went to leave, it started doing the same sputtering and bogging again. I barely got it home before it died in the driveway. Couldn't get it cranked again.
Next day, I went over and it started right up again! So I searched the threads about vapor lock and boiling gas in the carb and now I think that heat might be the reason for this.
Now I only have one question - Mr. Donivan, is it really called a hamburger fan just because you turn it on to go eat a hamburger??? Shocked

I like to go get me a hamburger and fries,,,,,sit in my van eating it while listening to my tunes which  have on a few Mp3 players  that I plug into my radio,,,,,,,now when you got an Early with the engine sitting next to you, it gets hot and since there are no emission controls on it,,,,you get a lot of heat and gas fumes whenever you shut off a hot engine and I surely dont like that when I am in my van sitting there eating my hamburger,,,,,,,so I put a fan on the bellypan or hang it from the floor to blow air up towards the radiator,,,,,this cools the radiator down which cools the doghouse down and you,  and pushes the fumes out,,,,, I put one of those ceiling fans twist timers on it so I can set it and forget it without worrying about leaving it on and killing the battery,,,,,,I pretty much have put one on every Early around me,,,,,,now I dont know about vapor lock, but look down inside the carburetor with the engine off after it sits for a few minutes after the engine is hot,,,,,,see if gas is laying down there when you step on the gas pedal,,,,,should be dry,,,,,,,hold the gas pedal down next time its hard to start, see if that makes a difference,,,,,,remove the gas cap  and run your tests in case you got the wrong one on it,,,,,,this could be a lot of things,,,,,get us some clues , then we can fix your problems,,,,,,

there are 3 things that make an engine run bad or not at all,,,,,,too little gas,,,,too much gas or electrical problems,,,,,,so when it wont start, look down in the carb, see if there is a puddle down in there,,,,,,if its dry, shoot some carb cleaner, which is a type of fuel, down there and see if the engine starts,,,,,,then that leaves electrical, they make spark testers that you hook on the end of the spark plug wires to see if electricity is getting to the spark plugs,,,,,,,,so run some tests and see if you notice something that makes a difference,,,,,,

Glad everything went well with the carb...its probably not the carb causing the hesitation but fuel delivery or electrical.  Check the cap and make sure it is venting. When you open it is, is the tank full of pressure or does it suck in like a vacuum?  Sounds like timing or idle is too low?  Maybe the HEI is bad when it heats up or advance is sticking when hot ( I'm not sure, do HEI's have a mechanical advance?) My old Beetle did that, same for fuel pump, maybe binds or pumps slow when hot...look at all those things...I'm sure you'll figure it out.   I park over a small floor fan when I bring it home and leave it run a 1/2 hour before I close the garage door to get rid of those fumes!

Well, to make this potentially never ending story a lot shorter, I sold the van. A guy has been after me to buy it since I got it home. He was looking for a project and I wasn't. He's more of a mechanic than I am so I'm sure he'll get it figured out. I appreciate all you guys advice. I will remember it for my GMC. I'm sure that keeping that V-8 cool will be a challenge. Hopefully the TBI doesn't have the fuel/heat issues. I'm going to stick a fan under there and eat me some burgers and fries too. Probably with the AC running though.
