Independent front suspension on Gen II vans? Empty Independent front suspension on Gen II vans?

Anyone have experience installing an Independent Front Suspension on a Gen I or II van? There are kits to convert Chevy trucks, street rods and a lot of other vehicles to IFS (sadly none for vans). It just seems like someone would have tried it by now. While I'm not a great mechanic, I've looked things over, and it looks "do-able". It looks like one of the universal crossmembers would weld into the frame and provide mounting for the A-arms. The main thing I haven't quite figured out is how the steering would hook up.

I'm really just looking for experience, suggestions and opinions right now, I don't want to start cutting on my van without giving it some real serious thought. I've got a "donor" van I could experiment with, but I'm sure it won't be a cheap conversion, either.

It would probably be easier to go with a Mustang II aftermarket setup that they make for the hotrod world, but I dont think it would work. Being a unibody frame like our vans have makes it a MAJOR undertaking, unless your going to replace/add a separate frame member up front. Just my .02.

I remember reading about someone doing this conversion. The end result was he wish he never did it because it was just too much work. Wish I would of bookmarked where I saw it Crying or Very sad

Check out the Ranger/Aerostar IFS, I know it will work on an Econoline, haven't measured a Chevy though. Rack n pinion, power steering and disc brakes are all a benefit of this setup.

    Later,
