i just purchased a 1964 econoline with a 170 engine. The only way to make it start at the beginning of the day is a quick shot of starter fluid in the carb. After that it will start by itself the rest of the day. The previous owner mentioned most likely a choke issue. Any suggestions? Maybe just a carb rebuild or remanufactured? I understand that starting fluid can be damaging and would like to figure this out soon.

Does the choke close all the way when you pull the knob out ,,,,,,,or is it an electric or automatic one?

Re: Won't start when COLD?
#1-get a new / rerbuilt carb! #2- likely accelerator fuel wel or float bown=l is leaking out causing no fuel for stsrtup! If manual choke?? pull type= pull shut & see if choke butterfly is completely closed?? if electric choke??- adjust closed when cold & all key switch is off!

Re: Won't start when COLD?
On the cold engine, when you pump the gas pedal, does gas squirt into the carb? If not, then rebuild or buy a rebuilt one.

Re: Won't start when COLD?
Thanks for the info! It is the choke, it does have an aftermarket cable and when choke is fully out there is still a slight opening on the carb. Appears to be the external linkage on the choke itself that is sloppy and worn because adjusting the cable makes no difference.....that little difference keeps it from starting because when I manually push it shut it starts right up every time.
Is there a way to repair that loose linkage or does the hole carb need replaced?
