65 Mustang tank fit in our vans? Empty 65 Mustang tank fit in our vans?

    Hello all,

I have a leak somewhere on the top of my tank and just received a 65 mustang tank from Rock Auto that I had bought to use in my '59 chevy truck project, but by the looks of it, it may bolt up into place of our original tanks.

I would be using a Stewart Warner 12 volt gas gauge with the mustang sender. I would cut a hole in the van floor for the filler neck and cap I think. Ideally I can have the cap below the floor and reinstall the cut out section on a hinge, to keep the floor free of any bumps, since I use the van to haul stuff regularly.

Here is a pick of my 64 as well Smile

I wonder if your vent hose has rotted off. It's a little unusual that your tank has rotted from the top. If my memory is correct, the 65 Mustang tank has about a 5" snout for the filler behind the license plate. I think any of these 60's Mustang/Falcon tanks would work in our earlies. Putting the access hole in the floor and using the smaller tank(16 gal) is probably easier than using the 69 Mustang tank (20 gal). I'm currently working on the 69 Mustang tank mod-----this is proving to be a little trickier than it looks. I'm no master welder and getting all the weld pin holes sealed up has proven to be a dog. Also the tank straps have to be dealt with. I've got some 67 Buick straps coming to see if they can be modified to work. Keep us updated on your mod.

Hey Mike.....I do believe I got the 16 gallon tank and ya the filler is on the top of the tank, a few inches from the back edge of the tank.

Vent tube rot is a good idea. It does seem really odd, but it truly does leak from somewhere in the top side of the tank...makes for messy fill ups at the gas station lol.

I also worry about the straps - if the mustang tank is at all fatter, my straps stock straps are probably not going to cut it. I had a 66 Buick and those straps are long, so that should help you (Same as all A bodies of course).

    I don't know guys.
My 22 gallon 69 mustang tank went in like a gem.
I followed Fred Carello's instructions and all went well.

got the nozzle and vent pieces from an old tank
cut the holes in the new tank and welded in the pieces.
welded over a plate on the new tank where the mustang filler was
put a new mustang sender unit in
    hooked up the hoses
    bought strapping from Home Depot
    strapped in the tank.
All done, no special wiring or gages, and I have 10 more gallons in my tank when I fill up.

I did not do the welding, I brought that down to the radiator shop. $180

If your tank is out, don't bother putting it back in.
Buy a 69 mustang tank and sending unit from ebay costing around $120.
Cut the two pieces you need from your old tank and bring the pieces and tank down to the local radiator shop.  They charged me $40.  Add some money for hoses and hardware and
you have  $180 TOTAL for a new 22 gallon tank.  You have to put it in yourself.

That's awesome Casimier. You have to cut and move the fill right?

OP, A lot of info on the Mustang tank if you do a search on here. But it sounds like Mike may have nailed you're problem.

I successfully installed the 69 tank using Fred/Casimier's advice. Only issue I ran into was finding the new straps to accommodate the larger tank. Ended up finding longer hook bolts and used the original tank straps. Fit perfectly. Thanks guys.
