Sears Service Van original paint color? Empty Sears Service Van original paint color?

Post by veefre Sat Aug 13, 2011 1:22 pm

A co-worker saw my '67 Chevy Van 108 (pictured at right) and he says the paint color is identical to what Sears put on their service vans in the 60's. He said it's called "Sears Service Green".

Although I told him that it's not the original color on the van - the original was a darker, metallic green - he seems to think the van started its life out as a Sears service van.

I've looked for photos of the original Sears delivery van on the net but come up empty. Anybody know of these, and know if the color on my van is a close match? I know it's currently a repaint, and I've always assumed that whoever selected the paint wanted to duplicate the turquoise color of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine van - not to make it look like a Sears product.

    G-Man,

    Fascinating. Thanks for the pic.

Did all the Sears Service Vans have side windows?

Now I'm wondering... which came first... Sears Service Green, or Scooby-Doo?

So now I'm also wondering... why did the creators of the Scooby-Doo cartoon series select the Sears Service Van as the basis for the Mystery Machine? Just kinda liked the look?

Or did they get a kickback from GM and/or Sears? ;-)

Must have been some of that "bad acid" they were handing out at Woodstock...

The first van I looked at before stumbling upon the Corvairs was a Ford Econoline with a three on the tree. It was most definitely a former Sears service van with provenance to prove it. The van was without side door windows, but with rear door windows- and was painted that awesome Sears puke green color. The one I looked at was faded and chalky, but it ran great.

There was also a divider wall behind the driver's seat and it was a metal mesh- to hang things on? If only I could have scraped up the 500 bucks, I might have been a Ford guy instead of a Corvair guy!

Where are all the service vans now?

Vefree when I saw ya van I thought of Sears shade of green.
Those sliders would be good for flow through ventilation with no a/c .

Leafing through the spec sheets on the GM archive site, I found that pop open rear windows were an option on these vans in 1969... would like to get my hands on a pair...

I also found a collector toy Sears delivery van on line, with pretty much the same color, and Sears in white letters inside a white outline rectangle along the sides. Sears definitely will not be painted on mine ;-)

When I first saw this van, I didn't think of Scooby-Doo, because it was well after my Saturday morning cartoon era. I just liked the shape of the front door windows.

Anybody got an idea what the paint code would be for "Sears Service Green"? I can't find it listed on any Chevy or GM paint charts.

I have had a paint shop say the color is really "Light Green 503" with is a correct color for 1967, but from what I can tell, the paint chip for that color doesn't match my van.

Others have said it's really "Seafoam Green", which is a valid color for older GM's like 1962 Chevys, as in "Seafoam Green 903". This actually looks closer in pics but I don't have a paint chip for it.

And, as far as I can tell, the original color for my van was really a darker green, a metallic color called Aqua Metallic 511 (which I found on a touch up web site)... it's of academic interest because I don't want to return it to that color.

I've looked for the Service Parts ID Plate but I think that was probably lost long before I got the van...
