Post by Guest Tue Aug 25, 2015 6:29 pm

Hey guys. New to the whole Vanning thing. I recently picked up a 67 G10 that has a 350 in it, stock rear and 3 speed. I have a couple of questions
This thing over heats. What radiator are you guys using or what fixes are a good idea. I bought an electric fan to push air over the radiator but haven't installed it yet.

Converting to automatic. Thoughts? I have the stock 3 on the tree and Im thinking of changing it to automatic. I will need to fid good resources to read about this. Need the pros and cons.

Thanks for the help1967 Chevy Questions IMG_20150823_200901

Ok as for the radiator=(i have a 67 gvan)-- i buy the 3/4 core alu. new radiators off ebay. Champion brand?? and as i use a side mounted flange on all my installs (chev & fords) I get ones for early/mid years chrysler cars (big cars) with 440 cube listings. These come with the auto coolers in the bottoms & side mount flanges-easy for me to mount. What you have to watch is this- chev & ford inlets & outlets are reversed from each other!!. Chrysler applications used both types in their cars - so just look for one with a chev inlet &outlets @ proper locations. prices usually run under $200.00 some with free shipping!! I also use a clutch fan =WITH!! a shroud too - they sell those (shrouds) too. As far as the trannys - I use a 700R4-built!! some like the lighter 2004r trans. But its actually a lighter duty trans. To each his own! cheers

What modifications would need to be done to mounts or cable hook ups needed?

Welcome, MHO, take the stock radiator to a good shop and have it flow tested, if it can be boiled out, have that done. If too clogged and corroded, very likely, have it re-cored with a new core that have more rows and larger tubes than the stock ones. I had my stock one with 2 rows of 30, 1/2" tubes increased to 45 rows or 5/8" tubes, 40% more cooling area and brand new tubes! I run all day in 90 degree weather at 180 or less. Recoring cost more than a new aluminum that have suspect quality issues and you don't have to modify the mounting, none of them are a direct fit and copper is still better for cooling, just cost more.

They used the normal car TH350 transmission with a special ring mount to hang the transmission in a van,,,,,,the newer 700R4 and 2004R use a made up  crossmember to hold the transmissions up,,,,,,,

people use the 2nd/3rd shift rod to shift the trans to get by,,,,,,you have to guess what gear you are in,,,,and it will start in any gear if you dont have a safety neutral switch hooked up to the starter,,,,,,or use a cable,,,,,people use floor shifters,,,,,put them on the doghouse,,,,,and you will need a kick down or throttle cable and linkage on the carb,,,,,,,maybe even a different u joint yoke and the driveshaft shortened,,,,,

,,and it looks like a back up light switch is in it also,,,,,,,M1, do you think hooking that unit to the 2nd and 3rd speed lever would work as good as using a stock auto trans steering column?

you are correct it does have provision for reverse light as well. You don't haveto buy the gauge style indicator . you can can get LED display and a veriety of shift displays.

I am using that on my 700R4 . It is attached at the trans. I habe my trans as a cable shift conected to the 2nd/3rd gear leaver of a manual colum.

,,,and like how much would that set up cost him? I see you drilled a new hole in the lever to match the movement of the cable,,,,,,,and what about that cable coming in from the rear,,,,,,what brought that about?

I don't know what I paid. I bought a complete set of custom ordered gauges for about $1300 and that was included.
If you want to play you have to pay, is what I keep getting told by a certain parts counter guy every time I am shocked at the price of stuff.

One can google "shift indicator" to see the availible options and prices.

Adding more, info, several have used aftermarket shifters like from Lokar, floor mount or use a console shifter and mount it on the front or top of the doghouse cover, check the threads, many pictures of these set ups. Others have transplanted stock auto shift steering columns but they are hard to find with the plastic indicator and needle intact and working, some repros are available for these parts but not easy to do.  And like Doni says, the stock tranny used a special hanger ring, very rare and hard to find, but they can be fabricated from steel stock and tubing or make a cross member bottom support like he shows, again, several threads with pictures here.  You might want to look for an auto tranny parts van if you can find one, some members here have them and may have just what you need, ask around like you did here!, Nice dog, matches the van! LOL

Awesome info! Thanks so much for the help guys. For now I think Ill get the radiator fixed and replace the front springs (they sag pretty bad) and rock the 3 speed. Id like to eventually make it more of a cruiser and take it places. The dog and the van are great, she loves sitting in the front seat.

well,,,,,,,,you got the weirdest springs in the World,,,,,,,,they are 3" on the ends and squeeze down to 2 1/2" in the middle to fit inside the U Bolts,,,,,,,,,you will probably have to get 2 1/2" springs and use fatter bushings so they fit tight in the perch and shackles,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
