Sounds like he probably wanted to buy one but felt the price was too high. I don't understand that because if he's from the Portland area, they seem to have some of the best pricing on the older vans!

You do have to admit some people do try to make them sound like they are a Hemi 'cuda or something, they are and were inexpensive trucks for hauling goods and services, there were lots and lots of them made, but they aren't making them any more and they are going up. In the hot rod world though they are one of the least inexpensive ways to get into a sixties cool vehicle and not break the bank, you can get a sweet van for 10k or you can get a rusted body of a 69 Camaro for the same price and they werent all that rare either..
I thin the the five window truck seems to be the  rarest and most desirable of the common models Im sure there are rare camper editions etc also, but I am not Econoline expert, we had one when I was a kid, so I got one.

I actually have a "Rare" van. I have the only known Ford Panel Van with a Camper Top. When I roll into a car show next to this joker, they will not be looking at his Mopar POS they will be checking this handsome bearded fellow in a badass Econoline. Go to a care show and see what is Rare.

Maybe our vans and trucks aren't "Rare" but they are "Uncommon". I go to car shows fairly often and see tons of Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, Cuda's, RoadRunners etc. I just yawn and move on unless there's something special about them.
I'm looking forward to getting the same reaction to my Van when it's finished as I do my '73 Torino. And that is "Oh Man! Haven't seen one of these in Ages!" I know it will happen, just like one of the last shows I went to people were more interested in a '73 unfinished Country Squire Station Wagon than a immaculate 57 Chevy sitting next to it.

btw lol @ handsome bearded fellow in a badass Econoline. Nice one WB

A good example of value and desirability there were probably 10x more VW busses than there were econlines, and they were cheaper when they were built, but because of the explosion of the surf culture they have become very desirable a crappy split will run ya 15k for a fixer, a safari micro will be 75k in project condition, 150-200 in perfect condition. The aren't better than the fords infact they are under powered and handle much worse, but people really like them and the Hippy culture that goes with them.
I like Studebakers especially the bullet nose, but Im in a small club you can still pick up on of those babies in great shape for like 4k

and no doubt the vans attract attention even with all those 100k plus restorations the vans still win awards and get tons of attention at the shows, but the most Vans I have seen at a car show yet is like 6, compared to the 25 Camaros and Mustangs, so they just haven't hit the car show guys yet, they will, and when they do watch the value skyrocket!!

Rare is not a good word to use with Econolines. They built over half a million. The thing with Econo's is that they went a long time unloved. Even in the van craze days they were unloved. Everybody wanted the newest latest vans. The earlies were looked down upon in favor of the 70's vans. Nowadays they are starting to get the love they deserve.

As far as five windows. Actually Ford built more five windows every year except 63 than three windows. The only reason they didn't in 63 was the big order from the Air Force.

I had a Mopar guy get made and leave once. He parked his very nice Super Bee right next to my pickup. Now anybody that's ever seen my pickup in person knows it's no show truck. The only reason I go to shows is to meet others that have earlies. Anyway. After the Mopar guy sat there and watched people walk past his Bee to take pictures of my old truck all day. He kept getting more and more irate. He finally just threw his stuff in the trunk and went home early. Said he couldn't believe people would take pictures of an ugly truck. LOL.

I love my truck. I have made sooooo many life long friends because of it. I've had many many different cars over the years. None have been as much fun as my Econoline. I wouldn't sell it for any price.

Of the half million I wonder how many are still around. They were not built to last 50 years that's for sure.If you go by how many see driving around, at car shows and for sale not that many I would guess its in the 50k range.

There is over 5000 in the registry. I would think 10% of production and 10% of that in the registry would be about right. That's kinda what the numbers are showing. As far as in use. Maybe 1%. I'm trying to add to that number. Right now in an area of about 80,000 people we have four pickups on the road. One Supervan, One Chevy second gen. No A,s No corvairs. There are some in the works but I never see them. It would be nice to see more.

If we really want to attract attention all we have to do is put "FREE CANDY" in duct tape on the side of the van and park across from an elementary school. Try that with a Hemi Cuda.

Don English used to keep the registry. It's now in the hands of Jay Long since Don passed away. Jay runs the econosrus yahoo group. The link you provided is run by Barnabus. A member here. It does a good job as well but I don't believe it gives a total registered.

I kind of look at it this way. My truck is a 66 and in that year they made almost 2600 of the 3 and 5 window standard trucks together and it's pretty close to that every year of production. How many are actually left today? To me that's kind of rare don't ya think?

True panel as in no side doors or just no windows in the sides? I have a pic here of a no window Supervan with a turtle top camper on it I took around 2004 or so.
