If anyone knows of a 4 banger out of a 2nd gen. I will trade it even up for my good running 250 6 engine. I got to have any required hardware to go with it.I'm thinking the 1st gens were the only vans to offer the 4 though.

Re: 4 banger engine
doug= ur likely correct on 1st gens having that engine!1 ur best bet is to find an old used boat that a seller doesnt want & can be bought very cheaply!! Just look 4 a cracked block & head before purchase. Likely u will need the auto intake & exhaust manifolds!= yet the marine parts are still valuable on ebay!! To boat owners.-I was having trouble getting blocks/engines in the early 80's in the marine repair buisness! Might try advertizing in local craigs list!!??

Re: 4 banger engine
Have been looking for the externals for some tiime. Hard to find intake and exhaust, to run in a van, for the boat engines. I think you'll find that the Mercruiser, OMC and maybe even Penta 4cyl are all 3.0 4 cyls. A little bigger than the stock 2.5 S-10 engine and much more powerful due to big valves and such (boat engines of the day had few emissions standards) so they are pretty close to blue printed engines. I believe the 3.0 Merc, et al, put out more torque, HP and are designed for higher revving than the 196 or maybe even the 230. Pre 1986 or so have a casting for the clutch pivot to mount. May need to be drilled out first. I think after 86 they were all the same blocks as the automactics. Hence, if you are running an automatic might as well get the newer block. Prior posting about freeze damage is important as I suspect it is the number one reason they get sold. Otherwise the engine, like our L6's, is pretty indestructable. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Re: 4 banger engine
I have a 64 but its got the 194ci 6cyl. I saw this 153 at the GM heritage center. The only 153ci 4 cyl I have ever seen.

Re: 4 banger engine
on the four cylinder pic , notice on top of valve cover , I guess it wasn't long enough to spell Chevrolet , I was told the 153 was the only chevy engine the had spelled chevy ,instead.

I'm sure they are available, but I dont hang around boat yards, and I have never seen one in a 64 Chevy or GMC. Then again, I guess I have never gone out of my way to find a 4cyl. The 194-powerglide combo in my 64 is pretty nutless. I can only imagine having a 153.

Re: 4 banger engine
the whole orig. air breather is not exactly the same as the six , in being smaller the one for a six wont bolt up ,
