So I have been wanting to get a little more power out of my 62 E van. The 144ci is fun but isn't going to cut it forever. I have done some research and would like to put in 200ci i6 since no modification of the dog house is needed.
my form brothers have been very helpful and telling me then straight 6 out of an early Mustang would be my best bet. But after doing some more research I read here on the forums that's a side loader transmission in my 62 may not be enough to handle the power of the 200 cubic inch straight six. so I guess my next question is what type of top loader 3 speed transmission should I look for? And also what all will I need to transfer from my old transmission to a 3.03 toploader 3 speed?? what will i all need to make a top loader transmission work on an early 60's mustang straight 6 in my 62 econoline?? Is there a easier way to to achieve a little bit more power with reliable transmission then route that I have stated?? Any help and guidance would be great.

Also,, will my bell housing and tail shaft from my current tranny work and bolt up on a 3.03 toploader tranny? are there certain years that will or will not work?I just need to know what to look for that will work for my 62. Thanks again

The easiest route is to find a 1963-1964 Econoline transmission. It will be an easy bolt-in swap.

Next best is the 1965-1967 Econoline transmission.  The trans-to-frame mount is different.  Either get the 1965-1967 mount and weld it to your frame or get the rear cover from a 1963-1964 Econoline transmission and swap it on the 1965-1967 transmission. Or you can buy/create a under-tranmission cross-member mount.

Vic LaFountaine (Old Skool) has the transmission parts and makes the cross members.

You could use a car transmission, but need to swap out the rear cover and output shaft for the shorter Econoline parts.  Or you can use the car transmission and get a custom driveshaft made. Carolina Driveline will make one for you.

Note that the 144/170 and the 240 engines had different gears in the transmissions. See the following chart for case markings.

I've got a 64, 3 speed tranny here that would work for you.
