I have found a 200ci from a 82 granada. I was wondering if it will bolt up in my 62 E van to replace my 144?? What should I look for? What else should I need??

Should work, but I know the bellhousing changed in 80 to a hybrid sbf/small six. You need to verify your stock bellhousing will still bolt to it. Does it have the small pattern holes as well as the large? Stanyon is putting an 80's 200 in his pickup, maybe he'll chime in.

Assuming the tranny will bolt up, you don't need anything, assuming you have all the accessories like the alternator, dist, ignition harness, etc. And some stuff off the 144 in the van now. I've read Old Skool mention the early tranny is junk and too weak for the 200, but it will work, just go easy on it. I would salvage the adjustable rocker assy from the 144 before you scrap it. Also the 144's intake valves can be useful if they are in good shape as larger exhaust valves for the 200 head. They are the same material as the exhaust from what I've read and heard and they work well. You may need to move the dip stick.

I will go to the junk yard in the next few days and take pics so that way onknow what all is with it. I don't really know what my stock bell houseing looks like. What tranny would work better for the 200???

Well if it's still in the car at the yard with the trans attached it would probably be easiest to get ahold of someone like stanyon who has one to look at for you. Also, try and ask you're question over at the fordsix forums, those guys should know.

Also, does the motor have the high mount starter or the low mount starter? I believe only the low mount starter block has the partial sbf bell pattern which I assume is what the 83 should have. The low mount 200 is a sought after version of the 200, and if nothing else, you should at least pull the head and the entire ignition system, dist, wiring etc. and take those. If it has the high mount starter it should be dual pattern and should work.

You will need to use the oil pan off the 144 for clearance issues and move the dip stick to the forward hole so that it is accessible. If the 200 hundred you are looking at is indeed in a 1980 car then it will have the low mount starter which means your old transmission will not work, that is with out a whole lot of parts matching, anything can be made to work. On my 200 for now I am going with a C4 transmission, parasitic power loss over a manual is only about fifteen HP I believe. As Seth stated save the 144 intake valves and the rocker arm assembly, that with the oil pan and oil pump pick up are about all you would use on the 200 conversion.

Don't do it!!!  Get a duratech 2.3 from a ford ranger and put it in there, it's lighter and gets better fuel economy.  You can get em with a 5 speed auto which will definitely help cruising.

Forgot to mention much better power than the 200, that 200 has slightly over 100hp, the 4 banger has 150!!!!200ci from 82 granada for my 62 e van. will it work DSCN1945

That 2.3 won't bolt up to my 62 E van tranny will it? I wouldn't think so. I do not not want to cut and fabricate to try and make it work. I am just look for something bigger than the 144 that will take minimal frustration and drop in.

well they make adapters for all types of trannys and the econoline tranny mount is as simple as they come, would be easy to do, however you would need to fab a new driveline.

Those rangers get 28mpg highway, I'm sure the econoline could do similar numbers, perhaps even better due to the weight savings. The econoline nose has more drag then the ranger but the bed of the ranger also has drag.

If you go with the 200 six your problem areas are minimal, if you go with another engine, such as the 4 cylinder Ranger mentioned earlier you will have to bring with the engine the wiring harness, sensors and the on board computer, cat converter so you get the proper readings for the 02 sensor you will have to install. These newer engines can be made to run without the above but they will not deliver as originally intended, the on board computer controls air intake and fuel delivery, Keep life simple and stay with the 200.

Its IMPOSSIBLE to get an engine to run as efficiently as any computer controlled motor.  The sensors tell the computer what to manage and how to CONSTANTLY get the maximum horse power the engine can put out at ANY time.
The BIG issues is that without all of the sensors as Stanyon mentions it will never deliver the same torque, horse power and last of all fuel mileage.  Its as simple as that.  The 200 is a great motor and very snappy response. Its a great replacement for any of the small sixes and all of your drive train will bolt up.
In regards to FANCY FLUSHES COMMENT   "how easy the donout mount is to make"  I would like to see that. To add to that,,  if  you were to make one (?????) with an adapter to the Ranger motor,,,, The only reason I can see for you to make one would be that you wanted to mount it into the stock location, correct????????? so I am trying to make sense of the rest of your statement???????????
To use your own words and thinking then,, if the stock donout mount location is used, then why in the world would you need to and quoting you...."however you would need to fab a new driveline. " That makes absolutely no sense to me,,, if you are using the stock location for the donout mount tail stock?????????????????
In regards to reyreh07,,,,,,  be careful as you have a very  thin frame gauge thickness and they are prone to cracks. If you run to big a motor without using a cross member be careful you don't end up cracking the frame.  I have seen a few and actually have one scheduled to go and repair next week.  Same issue,, a 62 with a cracked frame...
I have worked on a few 200's and they are a great motor. Also, you will for sure be dumping that rear axle and getting a better gear set.

Finding a "Good" 200 is pretty hard to do nowadays. The 200's were built in the 70's for the most part. That's a long time ago. Most are going to need a complete rebuild. I've been looking for years for a good used engine. I've bought several just to discover they were going to need everything. About a $1500.00 rebuild. So far I've spent $800.00 on used engines that could have gone to a rebuild. Wasted a lot of time and energy looking for something that just doesn't exist anymore. Just build one then you will know what you have.

{{   Not to hijack the thread, but that 2.3 idea got me curious.  I just was nosing around and found some interesting info on it here in this thread from another forum.  I can always count on the BMW scene to really dig in to an idea and provide very technical information..  They discover that the motor won't run without the stock ECU (duh), or a stand alone ECU, due to fuel pump modulation by the ECU, so you need at least portions of the original dash cluster and the OBDII system. While the benefits would be wonderful, the wiring for the project would be intensive.

Yep, it should have the dual pattern. It's a large log motor as well, so it has a better head than the earlier ones, but not as good as the 77-80 or 80-83 head, b/c those have hardened exhaust valve seats and a larger intake valve. If you buy that motor you should revisit that granada and take those items I mentioned earlier.

Not sure where you are in the midwest, but I'm in the Topeka,KS area and might have access to a couple of rebuild-able 200's. They are getting hard to find. I've also seen engine re builders online that sell long blocks in the $1200 ranged plus core charge(usually $200ish) I try to pick them up when I see one in my area. I love the Ford 200 but I wouldn't waste my time using a 144 or a 170 for a boat anchor.(please take no offense if your running those in your vehicles)
I'll also tell you that those fellows over on Ford Six Performance can teach you how to make a 200 smoke that Dura Tec 2.3's hiney. Obviously, I'm all for fuel injection and computer control, but sometimes it's just not worth re-inventing the wheel. I build and drive old cars for the nostalgia not the gas mileage. Like Vic said, a computer controlled engine will get the most out of the package.
