I've got a 1st gen Chevy van and I need parts to do a v8 swap. My van has no engine cross member at this time.

Re: Need parts in Ga.
ggs welcome to VV!!!!
If your going with a V8 the best thing would be to find a second gen donor van. That way you would have the second gen doghouse and cross member. If you don't use a second gen doghouse you'll have to modify the first gen doghouse to clear the head area of the V8. A second gen V8 cooling system would also be an advantage.
There's lots of ways to do the V8 swap. Just keep searching the forum or ask away with questions. Pic's are a real help when you need help!!!!!

Re: Need parts in Ga.
Thanks for the advice on the v8 swap. I've been reading as a guest on your {our} site and I now know what parts I need but I have not seen a 1st or 2nd gen Chevy van in my area in a long time and I need a lead on a parts person. I'll try to get a picture on here soon. It's a solid old van that needs some love. Thanks again.

Thank you for the welcome fellow vanners. I've had this van for about 10 years just sitting behind the shop it's been way down on the project list but it's time to get her on the road.

Re: Need parts in Ga.
How about throwing an ad on craigslist looking for early parts. You will be surprised what goes out of the wood work!!!!!

Re: Need parts in Ga.
Today I found a 2nd gen v8 parts van with the motor and auto trans still in the van so I can get all the parts to do my v8 swap. Is this a bolt in deal or do I need to keep looking for other parts?

Re: Need parts in Ga.
ggs here a link that shows a lot about doing the conversion. It's not just a bolt-in. You'll need to scroll toward the bottom of the link and watch the video that there.

Re: Need parts in Ga.
Thanks Wideload that video had some good points and will save me a trip or 2 back to the junk yard that's got the parts van. I will be cutting the floor out of the parts van. I guess my question is will the cross member from the 2nd gen bolt into my 64? I could not get under the parts van to get a good look, I've got to take my back-hoe to the guys bone yard to get the van out of the woods. It has no front axle and is setting on the springs it does have the shifter and linkage all still in tack I hope I can use. The drive train is also in tack right down to all the brackets and such.

Re: Need parts in Ga.
I don't think you'll have to change the cross member. Maybe someone else will chime in so you'll know for sure. You might have to change the motor mounts.

Re: Need parts in Ga.
You can use the 1st gen crossmember but the 2nd gen gives more clearance. If the parts van has an auto get all of the hard to find pieces ,auto column, auto tranny mount(rarer than hens teeth),fan shourd, radiator, radiator tank, doghouse. To be honest if you can but the whole van, you will be amazed all the parts you will rob from it
