pedal return / tension spring Empty pedal return / tension spring

Post by sandyvan Sat Dec 14, 2013 4:14 pm

Does anybody have a part number for a return spring for the accelerator pedal?  Mine snapped and I haven't found one searching AutoZone and O'Reilly, etc...

Wouldn't mind replacing the brake pedal spring while I'm at it.

I bought a spring at the hardware store and rigged it up, but it is way too stiff. Just try different gauges until I find one I like?

Yep. They had a ton of options at True Value also, just no exact fits. I'll have to try a few others, get the right feel.

Seems to me you got other problems if you are having a spring problem,,,,,,the linkages have bushings and the pedal should work real easy if you disconnect the rod from it,,,,,,the bushings in the pedal should be greased,,,,,,,

OK I will check that out, but the pedal was not sticky or catching before. I had the spring off and on a couple of times when I was swapping the carb, it was just old and brittle I think (47 years!), it snapped right at the bend that attaches to the pedal mechanism, not at the body. Luckily I was just heading out from my house (to Home Depot ironically) when it broke off so I just parked it back in the drive.

Have had good luck with the assorted springs the big box auto stores sell in the "Help" section. Usually have 4 or 5 springs in the big or small sizes. Have not found anything stock. I found brass bushing that fit my assembly at the local ACE Hardware store. Derust, paint, white lithium grease, new springs and about 5 hours later I was good to go. Happy motoring!
