    You could find some 10" spots with all the bump outs in the tank, but that 8 1/4" would be just about what the straps will fit,,,,,,,,

    ,,,,,you surely don't want any smaller tank,,,,,,,the 64-67 vans have that 16 gallon tank and you don't get too far with that......

    .........you can knock that rear crossmember out and put a 68-70 24 gallon tank in yours ,,,,,,,I had to  add this 10 gallon VW tank to get me through  the 1978 Oil Embargo gas rationing,,,,,,
