Re: california registration question
Sorry to say that all vans and pickups are registered as "commercial" vehicles in California. It's a way for the State to collect a weight tax on your yearly registration renewal. Adds about $25.00 a year to your total fees, and no, you don't have a choice in how you register it unless you go the antique plate route which won't work on a daily driver.

Re: california registration question
I got commercial license plates on my 65,,,,,they are the original plates,,,,,,I think if you have windows or seats in it, you would get regular plates for it......

Re: california registration question
They registered my Sportvan as a passenger vehicle. It has to have passenger seats and windows for that to happen. My panel van was registered as a commercial. Tried to get it registered as a passenger vehicle since it was cheaper but they wouldn't go for it. Also if it's new to California and it's a commercial vehicle you'll need to get a weight certificate which shows the unloaded weight.

When I registered my panel in 2001, the DMV guy asked me Commercial or Passenger? I do not have any seats in back and there are no windows but in the back doors. I guess I was lucky

Re: california registration question
i'm going through the same thing with my econoline. i tried to get YOM plates and was told what I had weren't commercial plates and my van was registered as a commercial vehicle.
They said I had two choices for plates, either stick with what I had (blue plates) or I can bring the van there and have it inspected to see if it qualified for a non-commercial status. They told me the inspector would be looking for front and rear seats (probably two bench seats) and to make sure that it couldn't be 'used for work'...
so i found YOM commercial plates. too much hassle to try and get it reclassified.

Re: california registration question
My commercial registration had probably been $50 since 1970,,,,,and is now $102,,,,,so what are you guys paying each year for registration,,,,,,,I think they base the registration fee on when you applied and what you SAY you paid ,,,,,,,so what does that registration sticker cost you for your Early???

Re: california registration question
I got you!!! Had the same thing happen to me. I take it you do not have any seats in the back right??? Just half a$$ a seat in the back take it in and have them inspect it and then they can register as a passenger. Stupid DMV, it took me 9 visits to get it right. I actually got escorted out of the DMV. Awesome!
