    1) My fuel gauge is not working. I put in a new sending unit when I redid the tank. The ground wire is bolted to the frame. When painted the tank...it included where the sending unit seats. Does that need to be bare metal? Does the gauge itself go bad?

    2) When I put in the new temp sending unit, I used the white tape around the top part of the threads like the old one I took out had. Was that right to do?

I don't know what van your talking about?

Thread tape on a single wire temp sender may interrupt the ground and make it read wrong or not at all. But that doesn't always happen. Check it with an ohm meter.

The fuel sender need to be grounded yes. there should be a ground wire right off the sender to the body. If not then your paint job may be keeping the sender un grounded.

Did you put in 90 ohm sending unit? take the wire off the tank, or unplug it by the left rear tail light,,,,,turn on the key,,,,you should have 12 volts coming out that wire that is coming from the fuel gauge,,,,,,with the wire disconnected, the gauge should read Full,,,,,touch the wire to ground,,,,the gauge should read EMPTY,,,,,

You can get to much tape on the threads, I have done it. you could check the circuit by manually grounding the wire out and seeing if it pegs the guage. if it does , try backing out the sending unit and re tighten it, perhaps breaking thru the tape some. This is assuming the temp doesn't work.

If the gauge passes the wire disconnected/ wire grounded test,,,,,then you need to be looking at that sending unit,,,,,,,

Did it look like mine? Shit...what was inside was mostly gone. Could not tell ya. Did mine have the nut on top? Nope. Did I cut it off the new one? Yup. And no, I had no idea how much people are paying for them.

Turns out the sending unit and gauge work fine. My driveway is so steep that even though I dumped most of a 5 gallon gas can in it, it did not register until I backed out of drive. LMAO! But I do have some electrical gremlin somewhere. IF I hit a decent bump...or tap the gauges...both blinker arrows light up and fuel gauge goes off (usually). Any ideas?

I think you got some connectors that go onto the printed circuit board,,,,,,pull the dash, clean the contacts and put Dielectric grease on on them and see if that takes care of the problem.
