    Front Drums??? Empty Front Drums???

Post by ndjarrett Thu Feb 23, 2012 2:28 pm

OK. I ordered all new brakes for my 1966 Econoline. When I take off the front drumms, they appear to have the hub (or what I am calling the hub...it holds the bearings) attached to the drum?? The replacement drums do not have any hub on them! This is my first old Ford so I dunno much about them. Can this hub be taken off of the old drums and put on the new ones? It looks like the ring on the backside holding the studs is a separate piece, but I cannot tell if the peice on the front is separate. Anyone know what I am talking about here (LOL)??

    Help appreciated!

I think I found my own answer...

...I assume they are same as a Mustang...more or less.

Neal, you press the studs out like that picture you WILL RUIN the drum and the hub. Hubs are getting hard to get. They are pressed together, Old School has posted how to get them apart

The only thing is the studs have a shoulder on them where they are staked to hold the drums tight. This needs to be cut down so they don't enlarge the holes in the hub when they are pressed out. If the holes get enlarged the new studs won't lock into the hub when they are pressed in. A hole saw without the center drill can be used to cut down the shoulder. Check with site member "old skool" for more info on this subject. He has great pictures.

I see you are from Memphis. I'm just an hour down the road in Jackson. PM me if you want to talk about Tennessee Econolines.

    Duane in Tennessee.

If the drums have been changed, they probably are not staked,,,,,and I doubt that you will stake them anyways,,,,,a Chevy Guy has a little different version of replacing Ford drums than that Official Ford Factory way of doing things,,,,,
