Best parts vehicle? Empty Best parts vehicle?

Post by bubbafrye Sat Nov 05, 2011 3:46 pm

So my head gasket blew in my '67 Econoline Falcon and the [1984~1986] 300ci that was in there is toast.

I don't really have the cash or time for a rebuild right now, so I was thinking about getting another vehicle for the winter while I save up.

I figured I might be able to pick up something with a 300 in it and then swap it out for the blown 300 in my van this spring.

If I'm going down this route, what else should I be thinking about harvesting from this donor vehicle and what kind of rig should I be looking for?

    Things that come to mind:
    - upgraded distributor [still have points in mine]
    - could I do a rack/pinion swap?
    - newer steering box?
    - disk brakes?

    Thanks in advance!

FYI - I'm in the Seattle area.

    Welcome to the site!
Ford used electronic ignition from 75 up.
No rack is an easy swap.
Only early vans used the same type box.
disc brake swaps use calipers and discs from different vehicles.
Your best bet is to find another van or PU that is rotted but has good parts and engine.

Hey - thanks for the quick response!

I actually got the go-ahead from the "boss" to get a reman'd 300. I said the phrase "parts car" and it suddenly got a little chilly in the room.

I was thinking about going with one from gearhead motors. I'll put the URL up when I'm nottying on my phone.

Anyone have any experience with them? The prices are good and no tax to WA state.

Spend some time comparing, especially the quality of parts and the warranty/service after sale.
Don't forget all the extras that don't usually come with a long block.
Water pump, starter, hoses, belts, fluids, fuel pump, cleaning and repainting your tin (valve cover, oil pan, timing cover) and rebuilding or replacing your carb and dist. Clean and paint the pulleys and brackets also.
It's always good to start out with all fresh components. Take a look at your battery, alt. and battery cables too.
Don't forget a fresh engine runs warmer, so check over your thermostat and radiator.
It stinks to have a new engine and have no money left over to get all the extras.

FYI - thanks again for the feedback. I wound up getting the motor rebuilt at a local shop - http://www.engineserviceinc.com . They did a great job - thanks Dave!
