1966 Chevy Sportvan rear end Empty 1966 Chevy Sportvan rear end

Post by Guest Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:09 pm

I have a 1966 Chevy Sportvan with a shelled rear end. Everywhere I look to replace the differential gears shows a 12 bolt axle but mine is a 10. Does anyone know the specs on the 10 bolt that is most likely in my van so I can replace the gears? I will be driving it on the highway quite a bit and don't plan on pulling much ... any suggestions on gear ratio ?

    Thanks for your time
    Justin

The 66 panel I have here has a 3.36 ratio in it, That seems to be quite common. but there are options if you are buying new ring and pinion ? Some are going to 3.08's. It somewhat depends on what you have for an engine also.

Thanks for the warm welcome and response :c ). I had already purchased ring and pinion 3.08 for the twelve bolt with a master kit from motivegear then realized it was incorrect. I know it is the bigger of the straight sixes 230 ? I am new to the vintage scene as well as rebuilding and restoring so please forgive my ignorance on the subject matter.

    Thanks for your time

The vans came with 3 types of Differential ratios,,,,3:36, (10 bolt),,, 3:73 and 4:11 (12 bolt),, and in Positraction versions also,,,,,,,so a 3:36 has 11-37 stamped on the ring gear,,,,,,that is also the number of teeth on the ring and pinion,,,,,,

    Welcome to the site.
One thing to know, There are three different carriers in these "8.2" ten bolt rear ends because the ring gears get thicker and the pinnion gears get larger in diameter as you go up the ratio scale . The carries are made differently for three different groups of gear ratios.
Don't hold me to this, you need to research it but I think its
2-series carrier for 2.73 gears and down - Numerically.
    3-series carrier for 3.08 -3.73 gears .
    4-series carrier for 4.11 and 4.56 gears.

My engine is a 250 and I will hopefully be picking up another 10 bolt rear end tomorrow ... Got the van started today runs like a champ besides an oil leak. Repacked the front wheel bearings and all new drum breaks all around minus the rear drums ... Long way to go but may be on the road this week.

Thanks again for all the help

I actually met my wife in Blue Springs :c ) Small World :c p We currently reside in Olathe. Finally got my eyes on the differential ... Turns out the Ring and Pinion look brand new ... teeth are excellent. The spider gears are what is needing replaced (miscomunication). Thanks Dan for taking a look I really appreciate it :c ). Headed back to the van today (currently residing at my sister's an hour away) to see if I can find a casting number on the axle and see where the gets me.

Well after searching and searching I have figured out that I have a 10 bolt 8.2" 28 spline c clip type axle out of a camaro or something like .... My brothers (Shadow6010) 65 GMC Handy has a 12 bolt .. So much for thinking it came stock. The good that has come from this is that I now know more about old axles then I ever thought I would :c p.
