New guy questions Empty New guy questions

Post by Guest Wed May 25, 2011 7:58 pm

I'm currently looking at what the seller tells me is a 1966 G10. It has windows all around, a flat windscreen, a three on the tree and a straight six. It's presentable looking, but I don't have a picture to post at the moment. I'll get some this weekend.
    My questions are:
    1. How do I tell what year it is?
    2. What years do the generation 1 vans cover?
    3. When pulling the engine, does it come out the top or the bottom?
    4. What other cars will the wheels fit on this van?
    5. Other than rust holes, is there anything I should look for that would make or break the deal?
    6. It doesn't run and has no major dents/rust and the guy wants $1500. The bumpers are painted and dented a bit, glass is okay. All rubber needs replacing and so does the interior.

    Thanks ahead of time!

First off Welcome to the site!!!!
Vin # should tell the year
    First gens are 64-66
The motor can come out top and bottom
it has a stardard GM bolt pattern a lot of rims out there
To much rust is a deal breaker check roof gutters , doglegs , around the gas cap area. A good body is the key to a good early van, the motor stuff is minor
replacement rubber is out there for the windows
The only thing on your list there isn't a replacement is new interior panels, you'll have to redo what you have

    Welcome!
These guys got you covered, and spending a while reading older posts will give you a better idea what you are getting into.
Early vans are pretty simple compared to other cars of that time frame and all newer cars, so even if you aren't superman car-wise, they are a great project to start on, or pretty cheap if you farm out the work.

I'm on my way to look at the van again, only closer this time and take some pictures. I was out of town and the seller called twice to see if I would come back and look at it, so he may be ready to come down on the price.

Taking the motor out from the top and out the passenger door. Do you use an engine hoist? I have plenty of old English cars around and even pulling a 4 banger out of the engine bay can be a bit of a struggle, so I can't imagine taking a 6 ourt through a door way...

How many different styles were there in 66? I have heard of the Sportsman and I have seen those with no windows. How many variants did they have that year?

Thanks guys, you are a big help!

Okay, here are a few pictures. I looked a lot closer yesterday while taking the pictures. The head is off the engine and a piston has a hole burned in the top. There are several dents at each corner and the passenger floor has a hole as big as my fist. The drip rails look good and I don't see any rust in the body other than the floor. The cargo door exterior handle is missing as you can see.New guy questions C:\Users\Staples\Pictures\My Pictures\cars1\van New guy questions C:\Users\Staples\Pictures\My Pictures\cars1\van

Your not dumb and it's not hard, it's just a bit process that is easy after you learn it.

Get a free account set up with either Photobucket and/or Servimg.com and upload your pics onto there. Then copy 'n paste the pics's address (under the desired pic) into your post. Hit the quote button on one of the above posts with pics and you'll see how it's done.

    itruns,
I like the color of your interior. Do you have any pictures of the exterior? If I get the 66 that I am checking out, I'd like to paint it a 60's color that will be bright.

One question I forgot to ask. Is the rubber around all the other windows (not windscreen) available? If so where?

Yeah, but I'm allergic to cross-members and one wire alternators lol New guy questions Free-fighting-smileys-316

With a GM Early guru and his garage/barn full of chevy van parts 30 minutes away, you'd think i'd have converted by now, but nooo... I choose to stay in the land of split windshields and 3 speed automatics! (btw - has anyone put a GM 4 speed slush pump behind a Mopar small block??)

donivan65, so JC Whitney sells a seal for the side and back stationary glass? Is it stuff you cut to fit? If that's the case, it makes me feel better about replacing all the seals.
