    Hello fellow vintage van enthusiast.
Great website you have here. I recently purchased a 66 A100 and am very excited to be restoring it to it original condition. Could any of you refer me to a reputable mechanic in the San Diego area that is proficient with /6's? From what i have read here it would seem a rebuild is the preferred method over replacement. I am also looking for a source on original paint colors. Thank you all in advance!

J, one of the reasons why so many of us like these old boxes is the simplicity.
This means even a newbie can do a lot of the mechanical stuff. Of course, if you have more money than time or are uncomfortable with working on it yourself, it also means they are cheaper to have repaired than newer stuff.
However, you need to find a good shop and stick with it. Try to find a place with at least one old-timer who knows what points and carbs are and how to work on them.
I used to work here and can vouch for the owner and the techs I used to work with.

Thank you for the advise and the welcomes. Handy i am but with bikes, new to the whole "car/van" thing. After driving the 66 home last weekend some 200+miles from San Diego i was about 45 minutes away from home when the / started knocking. To air on the side of caution i decided to flat bed truck it the rest of the way. Today i drove it some ten miles to a friends house to start to tear into it. First up was to remove the dog house...no issues. Pulled each plug wire while the motor was running and as such each cylinder ceased to fire. I am suspecting its a rod knock. I haven't yet done a compression check. Tomorrow i plan on pulling the motor and having it completely gone through as this will be a turnkey driver for me. I waited a long time to find a straight rust free panel van so the fact that i was even able to drive it home was a bonus. I'll upload pics as my project as it continues. Cheers Jesse

Funny thing Jfox, I was over @ a friends last night watching tv, showed him a few of the vans/p/u's on this site etc... (found your van on C-list @ about 2:30am) I was planning on flying down, buying it & driving it home as we thought it was just listed (as in May 21, not April!) Shouldn't surf so late I guess...

I knew someone on here would get it (thought Rod would as I think he is from Chino) or that the person that bought it would end up registering here. Needless to say, I had a laugh last night when I got home last night & saw your post & the same van! Great deal, clean van, grats! Wink

Thanks....this one was defiantly brought back from the dead to be sold. Probably a blessing you didn't buy it as i do not think it would have made the drive. I ended up paying 2k for it.

    Rock*, wrong Chino.
That's Chino CA, I'm in Chino Valley AZ!
It's just North of Prescott AZ.

jfox, better to start with a nice body. I'm going to have around 1K just in materials on mine, plus I've already spent 2K on my painter's labor. I've put at least a hundred hours in myself.....
I had a trans built and another done motor I've had waiting for a project.
