    1961 econo - looks all origional in eng & tranny areas- Red valve cover-Im thinking a 170=?? yet what is diff with 144?? Casting ID'S for 144 & 170 would be ?? Thanx

    red denoted a 170 back then (thru 1964), yes. 144 used blue. in 65, all blocks were painted ford blue. And I think the only difference between 144 and 170 is the stroke, so you cannot tell looking at the block. If the block code is C0 or C1, then it may be the original engine. Vin Code would tell you what size engine was installed at the factory, so you may be able to assume that you have a 170 there.

    The 1961 Econolines only came with a 144 engine. The 170 followed the following years.
