Cracks In The Frame, Common? Empty Cracks In The Frame, Common?

Post by BloodyKnuckles Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:24 pm

Well, I came across a crack on the drivers frame rail where the motor mount is attached. Being real familiar with uni-bodys I quickly repaired the area.

My question is, is this a common problem with the Econolines and is there anywhere else I should keep an eye out for additional cracks?

    Thanks,

Cracks around the steering box mount were common on 61 and 62 models so I ve been told. Also the spring mounts. My V8 ripped out the frame mounts in my 62 but that was due to a poor install by previous owner. What year vehicle and motor do you have?

I have been told the 61 to 63's actually had a thinner gauge sheet metal used for the frame, and have seen at least a half a dozen over the years cracked in the front area between the spring perches. When a kid,, ha,ha,ha,,,,,, my 63 pulled the entire front right perch out, and had to have it flat bedded back from the desert one time,, not fair, jumping the truck,, LOL... that was "Jacks" fault, not mine,,,,

The van is a '61 with, I believe, a 170. It's orange but not sure if it's original.

Thanks for the responses. I will go over the frame periodically and inspect for cracks. That's the only one I found so far.

    Thanks again,
