68 gmc has an auto tranny (2-speed) and a nice bored 40 over freshly rebuilt 250 engine, my 66 chevy van has a 3 on the tree and a kinda tired 194 ? is this conversion a major Pain in the a$$? or somewhat of a "bolt in" conversion ?

I'd swap in the engine (simple bolt in) and see how you like it with the 3-speed. Tranny will require changing the column and linkages, installing a trans cooler and a new tranny mount or xmember.

Sounds simple enough to me, I'd go strait to the engine and trans swap. Ya it will need shifter mods ( you could go quick with a cable shifter connected to the 2nd/3rd lever on the std collum) but getting rid of all that clutch and shift rods will be a treat. With a bored 250 you might need a new rad anyway so you could get one with the trans cooler built in. Other then that it should be a nut and bolt afair. you might need the auto trans yoke.(not sure on that)
For that matter you can just get the rad and shift linkage and anything else needed right from the 68, now that I think of it, should be easy with a parts vehicle close by. There might be some mods but minnimal

I think the 2nd Gen radiators are too wide for the 1st Gen doghouse,,,,,,,you would have modify the tank strap to get the 6 cylinder downflow radiator to fit in,,,,,,,

This will take care of the radiator issue.... Had one of these in my 66 for the first 8 months. Worked great..
