I have a 1969 gmc handi van and would like to know if anyone knows if there is any old model car or truck that I can get and take the air conditioner out of it and install it in my van?

Re: Putting A/C in a 1969 GMC Van
My van has a v8 engine in it and I don't know if it would work in it. I think that one out of a 69 chevy or gmc truck would work. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that has ever put ac in their van. I am thinking about installing a roof mount air conditioning unit off of a camper in it. I just don't know how it would look with it on it. I would try to sell all of the parts off of the 63 before I scrapped it.

There are 3 major components; compressor on the engine, condenser in the front of the vehicle, and the evaporator inside the vehicle along with the heater, vents and ducts.
The compressor can be done, the evaporator can be done, but the hard part is going to be the condenser. It's gotta get good airflow and not cause the engine to overheat. That's something that is tough with stock or mildly modified vans!

Does the evaporator go if front of the heater core? These vans are easy to run hot but with the wide variety of electric fans available on the market today. I think that I could keep it from over heating. Thanks for your help.

Re: Putting A/C in a 1969 GMC Van
if you want all new, not salvaged parts and 1960's-70's a/c technology, you could get a universal kit from vintage air ( like ebay item number #350382111598)
as for cooling, I'd imagine you need a big puller fan on a good radiator and a pusher fan on condensor, and an alt powerful enough for all that electricity.
I have a 1973 bmw that has been fitted with a japanese sanden compressor and does blow cold and does not drag the engine as the original behr brand compressor, so I'm a fan of modernizing the a/c if you are going to be putting up all that effort. I'm looking to get another early van and modern a/c would be on my punch list of projects.

Re: Putting A/C in a 1969 GMC Van
Saw this guy at a Swap Meet, he had A/C Brackets for GM 250 L6 engines, even had one mounted. I don't know what he's asking, but you might give him a call.

Something you will need to check when buying the bracket is how far off the engine it's going to place the compressor. Most the inline 6 engines are under car or truck hoods, plenty of room on either side so worries when it comes to clearance.
