Post by Guest Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:53 pm

Seems like all the 1st Gen'ers are wantin' the 2nd Gen'ers doghouses.

Leadin' to an ever shrinking supply of viable 2nd Gens?

I promise not to take one out of a viable 2nd Gen.

unless it's really dark, and no one sees me... lol!

Really the question is why the rush for V8s?

A lot can be done with the L6, and it's cool to hear a different rumble then what you get with the V8. I found a few sites that sell the L6 racing parts, but most of what they have is too hopped-up for me.

most of the doghouses I have seen sold here have been from parts vans. I look at it as one van saving many. There is another way to go also, billski has the stock 6 banger doghouse that has been modified on the sides and back and it looks so nice that it would be hard to tell if you knew nothing about these vans.

Scott and Nightmoves you are right in your thinking about your sixes. Good MPG's easy to work on. I'm going with a 8 in my 64 just because I can't seem to do anything the easy way.

I'm going with the modern v-8 because they're bullet proof with no tinkering needed. I'm a mechanical idiot so, Gary don't tinker.

Theres also the option of using a Dodge A-van doghouse. With the two 66's in the shop I was thinking of it real hard seeing as somebody already used a can opener on the floor for a swap idea. The wheel wells are a little bit higher in the chevy than the dodge, but it wouldnt even be that tuff to stick the dodge seat mounts in.. you wait, I'm gonna talk myself into doing it yet ,,lol.
BTW anybody got a line on a cheap rebuildable 350 -4 bolt or a 400-4 bolt sbc ? Suspect

I totally agree with the parts vans, sad that there have been so many lately, but if their to far gone then definitely pass on their parts. I'm even doing that with my own body, that's if anyone wants it when I'm done with it.

It's pretty cool to see vanners stepping up to help each other too. Without this site as a parts source it would be really tough to put some of them back together. I can't tell you the number of times that Vanners just offer up the parts their not using. Always willing to help other vanners with info and parts, that's part of what being a Vanner is all about.

I think cutting into the sides of the original doghouse is a good work around if you can't find a 2nd Gen Doghouse.

Doghouse Mod from the old forum..
    http://vintagevans.forumup.jobs/viewtopic.php?t=8836&mforum=vintagevans

A little metal shaping and spot welds and this could probably be done without the 2nd Gen parts.

They're all over Craigslist. Look for a truck block, if they know.

But in the 400's, the 2-4 and the 3-5 cylinder walls are 'siamesed' together, with no waterjacket in between like all other sbc's.
Notorious for those two hots spot causing problems.
Compound that by stuffing it up under a doghouse is like asking for a blackeye.

It really comes down to how you build it.

What did you put into the L6 fart machine you last built?

I would have to disagree with the "they don't rumble, they fart" comment. I had a hopped up 235 in my '54 Chevy p.u....it had Fenton cast iron headers and glass packs and a mild cam and it always made people think it was a V8 when they heard it. I think I'm going to keep the inline in the van fairly stock, though. As long as it keeps running nicely, I don't see any reason to screw with it.....

If we look close enough we all want something different for our finished projects. What brings us here is that we all have fun fixing them up. It doesn't matter if its us swinging the wrench or having someone else do it, it doesn't matter if it's a 6 or an 8 pushing it down the road, and it doesn't matter if we have a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or whatever.. We choose what we want for our vans, in our vans, and show some respect to others for what they choose.

I'm too much of a novice to comment on sound. I do know there's no replacing the sound of pure Detroit H.P.

BTW, I got my doghouse fro Heeman...Thanks Heeman.

I got this goofy idea from a West Coast Customs episode. I think I'm going to take a can opener to the engine cover and have a form fitted heat resistant glass cover inlaid. I want to be able to see the chromed out engine I have going in her.

Lots of us ol skool vanners on here actually like our inline sixes quite a bit. I think the six is a great engine for what I'm doing with my van.

Anyway, yeah what Scott said... Respect. Respect the six.

I love the L6's. Their great motors and my 250 is fantastic!! But I have a weak spot for 327's so I will run my 250 until it's ready. I do have some dual exhaust's for an L6 if anyone is interested...
