a place for the battery (1970 A100) Empty a place for the battery (1970 A100)

Post by Hamilton Tue Jul 06, 2010 7:07 pm

the battery is literally simply sitting behind the drivers seat on the floor. Is there a carriage, or box or something that can be purchased to house this battery? Is this normally where they position in these vans? seems like it should be attached to floor somehow...

    thanks for the advice!

I wouldn't be suprised if one of the guys here has a good one available and a good pic of it. I've got 1 but the condition is questionable, the bottoms get corroded sometimes, I would think about a marine type battery box to get you by for now if one doesnt turn up right away. I can double check the one I have if need be. Also depending on what you might want to do , it looks like the slide out step is missing on your van? ( the step is the reason for sticking the battery behind the seat). you may be able to do an under floor mount near the side doors with a little slice and dice and some donor parts.

If you do fine a stock one in good shape have it powder coat so it won't corrode as easily.

Originals have a top and a bottom, both metal. There are 2 holes at the bottom inside, with grommets for the cables. There is also a wedge shaped cover for the cables that is screwed down. 2 more holes with grommets for the cables in the floor, next to the doghouse.

Unless you are a stickler for detail, a marine or race car battery box would be fine. Just make sure to protect the cables (grommets) and vent the battery to the outside.

Well,,,,,,I surely would not like smelling the corrosion and acid coming out of that battery,,,,,,I would be getting something like this Chevy Van battery box or even building something out of angle iron or steel staps and mounting it under the van under the floor. You could make an access door in the floor but you don't really need one to get by,,,,,,,

Be sure to fasten it to down and use the tie strap. If the van rolls, you don't want the battery hitting you in the head Shocked Something like that could make a bad day even worse...

excellent point, itruns. I went to walmart, bought the $7 marine battery box. Drilled holes in it and the floors, ran some nice long bolts thru it, lock nuts and washers, strapped it down!
