    Insurance options Empty Insurance options

Post by Magic Bus Sat Jan 30, 2010 12:52 pm

Ive got my 67 econo insured with my automobile ins co. AAA is the insurer. My buddy tells me about JC Taylor and how much cheaper they are. I got a quote from them but then they said "Oh we dont insure vans because people would take them hunting and camping and we had too many claims".

I said so you do trucks? They said yes..Im like whatever its a private company and they are free to do whatever they want.

But the bottom line is Im paying about $240 a year for liability only with a clean driving record. JC Taylor had quoted $54 a year for $3000 worth of coverage until they figured out it was a van.

Do you guys have any tips for a antique oriented ins company with more competitive rates?

I use American Collectors. (They were recommended to me through USAA, which handles my insurance and banking.) They're easy to deal with, have reasonable valuations for classics, and their premiums are fairly low. I have several restored classics and my combined premium for full coverage for all three is less than regular car insurance was for just one.

I've also dealt with both Hagerty and Grundy in the past and I have to say, I'd recommend against Hagerty. They've got a real big chip on their collective shoulder and they definitely don't like insuring vans. I managed to convince them to quote it for me, but the valuation was very low and the premium was really high. Grundy was more accommodating, but the onus is on you to prove the value of your vehicle, so get your documentation in order before you call.

American Collectors did everything via phone / email and was able to activate coverage the same day.

Well this is all very interesting.... I know this is an old thread but Im still being raped by AAA insurance at the moment...I did however a few days ago get a quote with Hagerty. Half of what I was paying, talked to a lady on the phone, very nice... I was going to fill out the app tomorrow and submit it so we'll see? scratch

I was refered to american collectors by my "previous " insurance Co, because I mad ethe mistake of mentioning "Old". ACs rates werent bad but they dont want you to drive it anywhere just for fun, has to kept in a garage when you are not driving it, they wanted a pic of the garage btw. I know what they dont know wont hurt them but if they pressed the issue on a claim attempt you'd be SOL. I ended up running it as a 3rd vehichle on my 2 car policy and its costing me 74$ a year through Auto -Owners for the basic coverage. And I can drive it anywhere I damn well please.

Hagerty has been great and visiting with the gal in the office was a pleasure.I think some of the issues are real value and real use.I filled out a pretty detailed report( on things done to your vehicle) and sent pics ,on the report are things like vehicles you own ins info on those etc. bottom line is if your vehicle is worth $100 and your trying to insure for $10000 and or it's your only means of transportation yes the cost is higher or more difficult to get insured . I have State Farm for both my 66' Econoline Van and my 51' Dodge Wayfarer. Both are full coverage, comp & collision etc... No restrictions, I can drive it anywhere, anytime. I just have to keep it below 7500 miles a year. It is also agreed value, not book value. I love State Farm.

Mine are agreed value (20K on the '66 A, 15K for my '67 VW, and 15K for my '65 A) with a mileage limit of 7500/yr. Pleasure / general use driving is allowed on the 7500 mile policy. They do have to be kept garaged. My premium is $359/yr for all three vehicles through AC. If you have the 2500 / yr policy, they don't allow general use driving, but the 7500 plan was only $5 / vehicle / yr more for me.

    Hagerty, swing, miss.
    Grundy, swing, miss.
    JC Taylor, swing, miss.

wow! this is crazy! Infinity Classic Collectors just turned me down too, stating, 1970 A-100's do not fall in the category of vehicles they will insure....

and right before that, I was turned down by American Collectors Insurance because my car port was not enough coverage....I guess I cannot argue that one...

I'm hitting up state farm this morning, otherwise I'll be going back to Progressive....eeash!!

this is tough stuff! Where are these companies love for the van, man??

    USAA

Right now I have it listed as inoperable so it's costing me about $5 a month.

They didn't question anything, just looked up the VIN, found the model, and insured it with the rest of the cars at my house.

Motorcycles are a different story, they sent me to Progressive for that..
