    undercoating - Undercoating ? Empty Undercoating ?

Post by mcfly Sun Dec 13, 2009 5:25 am

Ok, guys getting real close to putting the Econoline on the road.
Since I live on the East Coast I have to do some kind of undercoating before I drive it on these roads.
    What do you suggest ?
    Por 15 ?
The underside of this van has no rust and I would like to keep it that way.
And yes I plan on driving this one year round.

Any product will help being you said there nothing there now. The key is to get whatever you use every where there are tight corners and hard to reach place where that salt can get trapped. I have heard good things about Por's , but I think its applied with a brush??? You need a product that can be sprayed to get in those tight areas

    Mcfly,
You can spray POR but you need a very old gun or better yet a undercoating sprayer. If you use an old gun, you need to drill it out to 1/16" otherwise it will clog up. Also it has to be thinned by about 50%. Like applying any undercoating it is messy!!! But yes you can spray POR......

If you not spraying it for show, put it on thick. Most important thing is to clean the undercarrage well before applying.

About 5 years ago, I used this ZeroRust under my van and inside the doors. I cut holes on the insides of my rocker panels and sprayed and rolled it in there. It still looks good,,,,,has not chipped or peeled. Looks like they use it on boats,,,,,,

I beleive POR15 is designed to be apllied to rusty surfaces. I have read on other forums of people using it on new frames and have a problem with it peeling. When applied to surface rust I think there is a chemical reaction which causes the bond.

Since you mentioned your van bottom is currently rust free you may be better of using something else.

You can buy some other stuff to treat clean metal before you use POR15. I used POR15 straight onto bare metal and it just peeled off way too easily....!!! Not sure what you would use to paint it onto existing paint though....

Oh, and it sprays very easily, but just be careful, as it doesn't dry as quickly as normal car paints, so you end up with a thin mist of the stuff on everything in the garage, including the floor, walls and ceiling.......!!!!
