Fuel Level Sender ohms ? Empty Fuel Level Sender ohms ?

Post by AzDon Wed Jun 05, 2019 1:59 pm

I know the info is on here somewhere, but my search came up empty.....
There was a chage in the ohms range for fuel level senders between first and second gen and I can't remember what the two ohms ranges were or when the changeover took place...

I'm considering using one of these:

instrument panels in my 69 van, but it is specifically made for a 62-65 Nova and I'm concerned that it requires the earlier sender..... Are the two van senders physically interchangeable if this is the case?

No on senders, 64-67 has 16 gallon tank w shorter fsu, 68-70 had 20 gallon tank with longer fsu...jm2c... study

FWIW - the difference in tank depth between 16 gal vs 24 gal is small (if different). I was told the 16 gal tank is roughly 1/2" shorter (drop measurement at the sending unit install location). The tank volume difference is in the front to back sizing. 1st Gen Fuel sending units will be okay in a 24 gal tank & visa vera. I have some OEM used Fuel sending units in a pile (1st & 2nd Gen) - I recall the lengths were the same and can verify lengths if requested.

Are the '67 fuel gauges the same as the '68-'70?
I put the new bigger tank in my '67 and bought the complete one with the sending unit installed. Now when my gauge is on 1/4, its really on "E".

It is possible you can "adjust" your float arm.

Pull the sending unit out, verify that when the float arm is all the ways down the float therefore is very close to the pick-up tube. Such that the bottom of the float is in plane with the top of the pick-up tube. Take an ohm meter, one lead to the pin connector on the top of the sending units & the other to the ground wire (don't let them touch). The meter should be reading close or very close to zero; I would definitely want to see it under 5 ohms. If at this low point check it is roughly 20 ohms that would explain the "false" 1/4 tank reading.

The easiest adjustment is if the float is on top of the pick up tube but the arm is not all the way down to the stop. Then you can tweak / bend the float arm up so that arm is down against the stop & the float is again in plane with the pick-up tube.

You can PM if you wish.
