Best place to buy new windshield and seal? Empty Best place to buy new windshield and seal?

Post by Abitibi Sat Aug 29, 2015 4:05 pm

    Hey guys

My new van will need a new windshield before it can pass the safety inspection. I see them listed on ebay (both glass and seal) but is there a better place to get them?

Also, is there a brand of seal (or glass) that works better or better quality? Sounds like you still need to use that sticky goo as well?

    Any leads would be appreciated.

    Cheers

I'm happy with the green. Not as much glare from the sun. When I drove into town with the old glass everything seemed to bright (My daily's all have some tint in the front glass) Driving home with the new glass it was Great. Everything in front looked clearer and more focused. My new glass isn't dark either, just a mild green tint throughout the entire glass, not just a top strip.

You are safe buying anything BUT SGC windshields aka Safelite Glass Corp.  To me the tint doesn't make a difference.  For sealing up your windscreen if you live in an area that doesn't have much rain and you don't want to clean up the mess bedding compound makes I would go with linseed oil on the gasket to body and then I would seal the rubber to glass with urethane.

What's wrong with the Safelite windshields? I bought a PGW, but haven't installed in yet.

I don't know how the oils would affect the rubber seal but another reversible thing that may work well is some old school Dolphinite bedding compound. Also, black Sika-flex is somewhat reversible. Both clean up and Sika smooths wonderfully with thinner when wet.

PGW glass is cool. When I say Safelite Glass Iam referring to their brand of glass that is SGC. Their glass meets minimum requirements while other manufactures exceed.

Hey neighbour no complaint about rain this year! I finally found one locally for cheaper than the only one I saw on ebay. I ended up paying less than $250US. It's still a lot but I needed it to pass my safety inspection. Just got to find a seal now. Smile

The seal you're talking about fits better than the one from CG?

Twinpilot, I found the gasket you were talking about here:http://www.steelerubber.com/search?c=/windshield-gasket&year=1965&make=ford&model=econoline&style=2-door-standard-panel-van

But it's $130! Any ways you know to get it cheaper?

    Thanks!

I've always used Steel's stuff---never disappointed. When I checked on the window seals for my 5 window E-pup, they only showed the windshield(which is all your looking for). Since they didn't carry the complete set for me, I ended up ordering the complete set from Mac's. Can't remember the price, but my old glass went back in my truck last Thursday and seems to be fine.

Never an easy choice. There's one on ebay for $42 now. Maybe it's a great fit and saves me money or I end up wasting time and money... I'm probably gonna go with one that's been used by one of our members even if it's more money. I'm just not much of a gambler!
