Alternator or Voltage Regulator Empty Alternator or Voltage Regulator

Post by ThomastheTankVan Sun Mar 16, 2014 3:31 pm

I put a brand new battery in my 1965 A100 on Monday. And has been running fine. Then last night started right up and then died. Battery was dead. Will jump off no problem but then die right away. Sounds like alternator right? Well the alternator isn't factory some Remy Delco 1100681. And I also found the voltage regulator and nothing was connected to it. But it's been running for a week.

So question is what's what? I brought the alternator to autozone and it tested bad. But why was the voltage regulator disconnected? And how was it running without it. I think the alternator is externally regulated too. So I'm lost.

    Help.

I think the gm/ ac delco had the regulator in the alternator BUT being more of a mopar guy i could be way off.

So maybe thats why the voltage regulator was disconnected? Because the voltage regulator isn't stock either, I think its an electronic one. The replacement alternator I found is externally regulated. And the one that was in it is obsolete so I can't find any info on it.

A lot of stuff was disconnected though. Like the wipers, washer pump, and heater. And I plugged them all back in and work just fine. So maybe it was disconnected by accident?

Sounds like maybe someone upgraded it to electronic voltage regulator, and left the old mechanical voltage regulator - disconnected.

According to this site, the delco 1100681 is externally regulated.

Hopefully you just need a replacement alternator of the same type/equivalent to the one that tested bad.

    Best luck getting it going.

Hey, so here is a web site you will also want to look at... That ammeter in the dash is a ticking time bomb that wants to turn your van into a dumpster fire. Mine was completely fried and the two ammeter wires were melted together for their entire length, yet the van still ran...

I have to disagree on the ammeter as a cause of fire. it is more or less a fuse, to much current and it will burn open not short to ground as a rule. the real culprit in old dodge vehicles is the mechanical voltage regulator. and remember they go through your ammeter so that's why it (ammeter) gets a bad rap. wires get brittle and the insulation breaks off, the connections get loose, and or the regulator sticks and overheats more than anywhere else at the loose or weak connections causing problems.
last spring for no reason I could see a wire burnt through the back of my headlite switch, or so I thought. the ground on the right front broke off and the switch searched for a place for the current to go. it found it out the back of the switch to ground. more problems from things like that than any. just my 2 cents worth...

    Well, problem solved.

Turns out it was the voltage regulator. The one that was in there was HAND MADE. The previous owner fancied himself a engineer apparently.

Oh course I was lost so I took it to a shop. As I already knew the alternator was a GM alternator the just matched the voltage regulator and shazam! All is well.

Just wish I knew more about this could have saved me $120.

Thanks for all your help guys, my custom convertible once again cruises San Diego.
