Haven't pulled the windshield yet Tom, got side tracked a bit getting the head gaskets replaced on that Chrysler. Getting it ready to drive this winter. I will need your advice on how to go about fixing that rust in the drip rail area above those cargo doors. Maybe get together Thursday?
Van Crazy, I got to drive this one the better part of last summer, this year has been it's turn to get straightened out for sure. I hate rust, and remove everybit I can.

Got the rot addressed above the cargo doors thanks to the advice of Savage. We also removed the windshield, and thankfully, no rust was found there! Replaced all of the seam sealer under, and inside the drip rails. Got her all prepped and in etch primer today!

I am leaning toward a victory red/pewter silver two-tone right now. After looking at that HUGE factory antenna hole in the front, it seems to be crying out to be frenched in. With the weather turning colder, I think it will look this way over the winter, and will switch gears over to mechanicals.

That primer works pretty well for me. It is a urethane type sealer and self etching for the bare steel areas. I plan to sand it with 320, then spray some high build on it for blocking if we get a couple more days in the 60's around here. Otherwise, it will stay this way until spring, and will start on the 327 and automatic install. Got lots of mechanical work planned.

A little update: Got a second gen doghouse base from Savage, getting ready for the V8 swap probably sometime in January. He had a spare front axle assembly lying around, got started on that by removing the old king pins, cleaning it up, and purchasing a new kit, and all new wheel bearings. I will be upgrading to disc brakes before the engine. Many pics to follow!!!! I can't thank Savage (Tom) enough for all his help.

I got those old pins out using heat from a rosebud torch, and a 5 pound sledge on a rather large drift pin. They were seized in there really good. Lol Looks like I will have some overtime at work for a few weeks, that will slow down my progress a lot.
I know how nice it is to have a good friend to talk vans with, and help each other out as much as possible. There will be someone in your area Dodge man, probably meet at a car show like Tom and I did. I thought I was gonna be the only one there with a first gen Chevy! Lol.

i went to a couple car shows in the area last month, i couldnt take the van the engine was smoking to bad, but didnt see any old vans not even a newer one, everyone in this area likes older cars, next year i'll have sunshine all done and plan on going to every show i can, maybe by then i'll meet up with a vanner, a few of teenagers stop by when they see my garage door up, i'm trying to get them interested in finding an old van, i offered to help them fix it up, we'll see where it goes, its great to see young blood get hooked on vannin !

That's great that you're doing that for the younger generation! I would have loved to have had a mentor willing to help and share knowledge when I bought my first van. I had a few friends who would help out but we could have used some "experienced advice" on some of the failed attempts we made. Keep on Vannin DodgeMan!! Got the front axle dropped out of the ole girl today, then Savage came over and we put the new king pins in the donor axle he traded to me. Next on the list is to get the springs cleaned up, and new bushings installed, then the disc brake installation.

    Millwright71's 66 Chevy panel - Page 3 Empty Progress?

    Post by millwright71 Sun Nov 17, 2013 4:33 pm

Working 72 hour weeks at the mill is really slowing my progress! The new springs from state spring arrived last Thursday, less than a week from order, to my hands. They look really good, had the rears done with one inch higher arch to possibly eliminate my need for the air shocks.
I am in the process of installing the disc brake conversion, and all new drum brakes too. After that, will undercoat the entire underneath, and install the new suspension. Sorry no pics, nothing too exciting to see with everything in boxes. LOL.

"If" they turned out the same, I had mine set for 1" over also. Have 295/50's sticking out and have never bottomed out even loaded to the gills. Pretty sure I am running front shocks on the rear also to make the reach easier. Maybe I didn't need to but I had them already.

Digz, I am running the same tire size, good to know they don't rub! I still need to order the new shocks, think I will do the same and order all fronts for her, just to be on the safe side.
