I was gonna post a pic of my original carb, but it is just like the stock one the first owner gave you. They are easily rebuilt for sure.

Re: 318 v8 Carb help...pics
Just a word about the original 2bbl set ups. Rebuilt the engine quite a while back and at the time I had the machine shop check the cast iron manifold. Even though it wasn't visible, it had a hairline crack. Got another from the boneyard and had it checked – it too was cracked. Got another one – yep – cracked. Although I didn't want to, got an edlebrock #2176 4bbl manifold.

When we get the new distributor, how can we put it in without messing up the timing. Keeping it the same as it is now.
Or will we have to use a timing light and set it

A side note, Put that Dual Point distributor on Craigs list or something. There's still snough old school hot rod guys out there who may be interested. Hey, A couple bucks is stilla couple bucks. By the way...Looks like you guys are doing great so far! Keep reading, doing and learning. I was raised by a 40's hot rodder dad, so I learned all that old stuff before the new, and now I dont like the new. Kinda funny from a 35 yo guy lol. Keep havin fun! learning new things keeps you young!

with the new dist.
set engine to tdc using #1 plug, see where the rotor on old one is pointing. Take out the old one and put the new one with the rotor pointing in the same position?

Re: 318 v8 Carb help...pics
Hope you are not out there yet!
On a V8 dodge, the dist can only go in 2 ways.
Find #1 wire (front of driver's side) on the cap. It should be at the front, toward the passenger side.
Pop the cap on the old one and note which way the rotor is pointing.
If the engine is at TDC #1 (always good practice to do this), the rotor should be pointing toward the #1 wire.
If it is not, you can go through a bunch of effort to time everything properly, but it will still run fine if you don't. Remember that even if the marks are aligned at the crank the engine could be at TDC #6 and the rotor would be pointing directly opposite. The main thing is to install the new one in the same position as the old one.
Draw a little drawing of where the rotor is pointing.
Remove the bolt and hold down that keeps the dist on the engine. Be careful not to damage the oil pressure sending unit or line that is near here.
Wipe down the base of the old dist and the engine aroud it so junk doesn't fall into the engine.
Pull the dist. straight up. Unlike /6 and all Ford and Chevy dist.s it will not rotate as you do this.
Clean the area and the hold down and bolt.
Install the new dist. with the vacuum advance pointing toward the passenger side. The rotor should point in the same direction as the old one did.
Install the hold down and bolt, leaving it just loose enough so that the dist. can be rotated but stay where it's placed.
Connect the wire to the "-" side of the coil.
Install the cap and transfer the wires to the same positions in order. 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 as shown in the first picture.

Where ddo you look from to see the timing marks to align for tdc
we have the driver side off the doghouse and can look in from that side

The other side of course!
Here's where the intermediate shaft should be at TDC #1
and 1970 and later engine have the timing marks on the driver side opposite the water pump inlet. 1969 and back have the WP inlet on the driver side and the timing marks on the passenger side.
You should see them here, the white marks on the Black pulley and the scale on the front cover.

Re: 318 v8 Carb help...pics
Well we got it all put in....it is sooo close to starting it sounds like. It will crank and fire for a split second then stop.
My dad is still thinks it jumped a tooth on the timing chain.
The distributor cap has 2 spots on it marked 1, does it matter which one you start at when plugging the wires in.

Re: 318 v8 Carb help...pics
They use the same caps for small block (Clockwise) and big block (Counter-clockwise). There should be an arrow next to each #1 on the cap showing direction of each. All the info I already posted should get you to #1 for the small block, then go around as shown 18436572...
If it hasn't been messed with ( a big IF), bringing it up to #1 TDC should have the intermediate shaft pointing as shown and the #1 toward the front passenger sid on the cap.
If it's trying to fire and NOT popping back through the carb (180 degrees out), try advancing and retarding the dist. Advancing is pulling the vacuum advance forward (most likely) retarding is pushing it back to the rear.

Post No. 9 explains how to check for a worn timing chain. It will be WORN if it jumped!
That way, you KNOW if it's worn/jumped, not just THINK it is...
