    V8 Removal Empty V8 Removal

Post by Roman Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:25 pm

Has anyone removed a small block V8 through one the front doors?

I do not feel like driving my van to the shop and towing it home. I will drop the transmission and cut the doghouse out so all I have to deal with is the engine.

Just in case you're wondering, I don't have the luxury of side doors anymore.

Roman, there are threads here documenting removal.
The engine will come out without cutting. It can also be dropped down the bottom.

I have had my 302 and AOD out several times and always through the door, lots of room. Also, I didnt split the motor and trans, in and out as one unit.

I conducted a search specifically regarding removing a V8 from the front door and was unable to find anything fitting my search criteria, hence this thread.

I am cutting the doghouse out either way since I am not using the original style. I'm pretty sure a V8 will not fit through a first gen doghouse from the top anyway.

I have taken out the engine from the bottom several times before and through the side door as well.

The question wasn't about my options, rather if someone has experience pulling it through one of the front doors. The problem is I am going to do this in my front yard with a cherry picker and do not have a lift to raise the van up high enough to pull it out from the bottom.

Well roman I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to go threw the doors most of us don't have whats needed to go threw the bottom. If the pickup guys can do it, sure you'll have no problem

If you hook the cherry picker up to the front bumper brackets it will pick up the front of the truck on the one ton setting easily and safetly.

I'd be inclined to drop the motor and trans on the ground using the cherry picker than lift the body up from the engine.

I quite often pick up the entire body of my car with a standard cherry picker.

If you are doing it as one unit then have someone inside to guide and lower the trans tail section down and into place. If you are just doing the motor then it is a piece of cake.

I'm too dumb for complication. I think I'll try it through the front doors.

I'll be outside in my street. That's not an option either. Besides, I don't have a bumper or brackets.
