Rubber retainer master cylinder rod. Empty Rubber retainer master cylinder rod.

I am installing a new dual master cylinder, Wagner R88783, for my Scarebird swap, and discovered the rubber retainer provided is significantly smaller than my rod. There is no groove on the rod, and the rod seems to fit in the cup of the master cylinder just fine without it. Is the rubber retainer necessary?

*My old single master cylinder did not have one installed. But it was replaced by the previous owner some 20 years ago.

I believe that its sole function is as a dust boot to keep debris and water out of the cup area. Not necessary but may shorten the life of the master a little if dust and dirt get in that area.

    My two cents worth.
