64 to 70 steering box will fit, nothing else the same. Yes you can get bearings and gaskets to rebuild them, not as a kit but researched and found individually.

there is a company in washing state (( i believe)) that sells rebuilt box's i believe he said it was about 600.00 for a rebuilt box . the reason i know this is because he had a box for sale on ebay for 299.00 but he pulled his listing about a day latter .. I tracked him down and he told me he pulled his listing because someone ????? listed the price to low .. personally i just think he was looking for free advertizing . I'm pretty sure if you check ebay for rebuilt steering box's you will find him ,,, hyway

now thats a great video but it does not show you what go's wrong or how to fix it . I've been told there is a ajustment on the box ???

the big nut that the steering shaft goes through is an adjustment
it is called the bearing preload, to get it correct you need an inch lb
beam style torque wrench to set it by the book, can`t remember just
what the spec is, if you google rebuilding a manual steering box you will
get it, most makes are very similar. the other is the sector adjustment,
center the steering shaft then make the adjustment, again google this
adjustment and you will get a video of how to do it all makes are very
similar. hope this helps.

Its just information that I share,,,,,,according to my book,,,,,which sometimes only I can read,,,,,but you get the idea,,,,,and the information changes as time goes by,,,,,the shaft adjustment is like wheel bearings,,,finger tight,,,,,those are like bicycle bearings in there,,,,,now the lash adjustment is about all you can do,,,,,,you want crank out all the loose freeplay out of the steering wheel, but if you take too much out the steering could lock up on turns,,,,,all the specs are great when things are new,,,,,but 50 years later,,,,you need to kind of play it by ear,,,,,there are seals and bushings in there,,,,the ball bearing guides could of been damaged if you messed up the adjustment or hit a curb,,,,,,and the original 90 weight oil in it has probably leaked out,,,,I like grease in there myself,,,,,but check out all those other places,,,,,,,

donivan how much grease do you put in a clean box to start? My buddy scored me some corn head grease(john deer) supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread!!!!!!! Just don't know how much to put in it

,,,,,for those of you who don't regularly check your gear box oil level ,,,,(OK,,,ALL OF US),,,,,there is a bolt you take out and add oil through the fill plug until it runs out,,,,,however,,,,pump grease into the fill plug hole until it runs out it should keep all those ball bearings happy......

,,,,,I am not pointing out anything,,,,,that is a real picture,,,,,the writing and arrows are stamped on the cover.......above the middle bolt is the adjuster,,,,,a nut sitting over a set screw that uses a screwdriver to turn it,,,,,,

ok so that one in the middle is some sort of a adjustment. is that the one you use to take the play (( for lack of a better word)) out of the wheel or is it the bit nut at the end of the steering shaft .and i have looked on google tiring to find the right video didn't have a lot of luck finding a very good one for a chevy found a few for fords

There are 2 adjustments on the box,,,,,,the big nut on the steering shaft adjusts the bearings on it,,,,,probably never needs adjusting,,,,,,now that set screw behind the grille adjusts the space between the gears ,,,,,so put the wheels straight,,,,,loosen the nut,,,screw the set screw in slowly and lightly,,,see if that takes the slop out of the steering wheel,,,,,I guess up to an inch is OK,,,,,,tighten the nut,,,,jack up the front wheels,,,see if the steering turns freely without sticking or grabbing as you turn the wheel full right to full left......

Great video, donivan! I just finished taking apart the one for my '68. Thank you for the assistance. Mine has very little oil left in it, and a lot of nasty grease.
The only thing I can add to the info is that the 2nd gen boxes disassemble only one step different. Once you take the three bolts out of the side cover, you need to run the adjustment screw all the way through the cover. The cover is threaded, so it doesn't just slide off. Aside from that, 2nd gen comes apart and looks identical inside.

I just did this today! Found the writing and opened the bolt, looked like it hadn't been opened in 50 years. I stuck a small stick in and a bit of heavy oil came out on the tip but nothing flowed out. I did what Donivan said, I held my grease gun tight against the housing over the bolt hole and pumped it full of grease until it overflowed at the hole and put the bolt back in. I then adjusted the lash play bolt, felt it bottom out and then backed it off a 1/4 turn and tightened the retaining nut. Steering feels snug, no free play, if I turn the wheel even a 1/2" the front wheels start to move and it felt great on a test drive. The wheel freely straightens out after a turn, if it sticks or you have to manually turn it back to straight, its too tight and back off the bolt an 1/8 of a turn at a time until its turns free...hardest part of this is dropping the belly pan...again...My steering wheel is off center about an inch to the left when running straight, next up is an old school alignment shop with a Bear machine to adjust the tie rod and center the wheel. If its still out after that, I will probably leave it as long as the alignment is to spec, rather than make an adjustable drag link....my tie rod looks like it has a few bends in it, probably from PO's hitting things, probably what caused the wheel to be off but the van drives perfectly straight down the road with no pull or drift either way....

You count the numbers of turns from full left to full right,,,,,and put the steering wheel on 1/2 way between the turns,,,this centers the steering box ,,,,then you mess with the tie rods and adjust them so that the wheels are straight and turned in about 1/16" , which is the toe in adjustment,,,,of course we want wheel bearings adjusted, good kingpins, tie rods and drag link before doing this,,,,,

I'm going through this right now........There is NO ADJUSTMENT between the centered steering box and the left wheel UNTIL you make an adjustable drag link.....
BTW-- thanks for the info on lubing the box!
It looks like I'm going to need that cover gasket.....Is that cover plate unique to our vans?.... Also, is there an o-ring sealing the sector adjuster?
Does anybody have a parts source?
