Its called a Display van. There certainly were lest of that model made, but I wouldn't go as far as to say rare. There is probably about 10 or 20 of those owned by people on this site alone.

Its hard to say how many where made each year because they are not named separably on any build list they were lumped in with the panel vans.

Its called a display van because they were generally outfitted with shelving on the driver's side wall for use by servicemen like Sears, plumbers, electricians, small deliveries, etc. Many did not have a passenger seat or used the fold away seat so the driver could pass to the rear and get things and easily see them in the light from the windows on the curb side for deliveries. It wasn't to display your wares so they could be stolen or shown off to the public, it was for convenience...looks nice, great color....

Also gives plenty of vision for right hand lane changes and a nice big panel on drivers side to "display" your company name to opposing traffic

Our vans don't really have the numbers and documentation that collectible cars do of the same era, so its difficult to know how "rare" any particular model or trim option package is. Regardless, nice van you've got there, and just by the fact that its an early and a display van, its fairly rare, especially in the clean condition yours is.

KK is right, any good condition early is rare as far as older vehicles go. These vans are going up in resale value. I see an estimated doubling of price in the past ten years.

Rare like a steak that has only been cooked on one side.... Great alternative if you can't decide between a panel or windows.....

I also read somewhere that the Dealerships used them as "Display" vans so that the Plumbers, Electricians and other small business owners could make their decision which to choose by being able to see the Panel van on one side and the Window van on the other...I guess some of them liked the combination of both for the reasons y'all mentioned above! What a Face

The Telephone Companies and large service fleets like Sears all seemed to buy them this way....

Utilities in Southern California bought them with windows in the side and back doors only, by the thousands! Telephone, Electric and gas companies would auction off big blocks of them starting at about 5 years old, so the ex-utility vans were mostly (at least, at first) e-vans, because the utilities had bought into them early....

Seems like hundreds of the early surfer vans I was aware of back then were ex- Pacific Telephone, military green e-vans with side-door windows...

Which category would the Display van fall into? Panel, Sportvan, Custom, or Deluxe

I don't know but logic would say Panel van - Custom...I guess??? Unless they considered Display Van as it's own category??? scratch scratch scratch
