Trouble is........Anything you do is going to diminish the thickness of the tank and getting 100% of all residue could be an issue...... I took a tank to a radiator shop for cleaning and the acid burned through.....Nobody makes a new tank that I know about, but I'm considering a 53 chevy gas tank from tanksinc.com........

Really, the way to clean up a tank is to drop a longish piece of chain into it and take it for a weekend ride in an offroad vehicle (or use some kind of shaker device)

NEED A GOOD GAS TANK FLUSH PRODUCT Empty Tank Flush

A good step up from evapo-rust is OSPHO - It is a very good rust neutralizer  I use this stuff all the time on the van.

I get it at the Hardware store; does not cost anything near what is on the web page: http://www.ospho.com/

I would favor a combination of the OSPHO & follow-up with the chain clean.

    ALRIGHT,THANK'S.
    I DIDN'T RUIN IT YET.
I THINK IT CAN RIDE AROUND IN MY P/U
FLIPPING IT FOR THE CHAIN SHAKE FOR
A WHILE.I FIGURE IF I CAN GET IT ALL
CLEANED UP,I BLOW IT WHEN I GO TO WELD
ONE PIN-HOLE.[THE METAL IS GOOD ALL AROUND IT]
LOOK'S LIKE IT WAS A REPAIRED DEFECT?
NO HURRY,I KNOW WE CAN'T GET AN EXACT REPLACEMENT.

I took my '64 tank to a radiator shop too, they "boiled" it out and it was fine. They also said DO NOT coat the inside after cleaning, simply let a light orange patina form, that's the way they came from the factory, bare metal, it will take another few decades to rust enough again to flake off. And if any spots rust through, have it patched, very common for a tank/radiator shop to do. Like said, you cannot find replacements for these too easily.

I see you are in NJ! Hi Neighbor....yes, radiator shops are getting hard to find, all new vehicles use plastic and aluminum throwaways....Many in north/central NJ have gone extinct except one! St. George Radiator up in Linden, NJ on Rt. 27.  Look him up, real old school shop does tanks and rads. Can re-core rads, clean and repair your tank, reasonable and you can even ship it to him, does lots of local muscle cars in the area, commercial trucks and buses, etc....old school, no website but here's a link with phone number.
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/St.+George+Auto+Radiator+Repair/@40.6442456,-74.2560968,14.74z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xb96579016b8ac1a9!8m2!3d40.644178!4d-74.255061

Take a cruise up the Turnpike one day, his hours are limited though, closes by 4 PM and no saturdays....but does good work, did my tank and radiator for me.

Years ago I had an old Plymouth VIP that I got cheap but it needed a bit of TLC and the gas tank was the major issue. I removed it & washed it with hot soapy water & rinsed it clean, inside & out, used a electric heater to dry it. I sanded the outside with fairly course sandpaper until it was rough, cut some fiberglass cloth to fit the bottom up the sides to the seam & covered it in resin, put the cloth on & brushed lots of resin on numerous times. I drove the car for 4 years and never had a problem with another leak. It was a lot of work but seemed to have done the job.
The entire tank could be covered over with glass.

Ya, never thought of the new gas. There wasn't quite as much garbage in it during the 80's.

    Here is what Amazon has.Ospho
Same brand I have used, but what I used was green.  This looks blue.  I'm sure it would be cheaper if you could find it locally.  It is phosphoric acid and the shipping is high.  I found it at a paint place(don't remember which one).
