Gear ratio for a 9 inch Empty Gear ratio for a 9 inch

My van is running a fresh 300 engine and 3.50 gears out back. I have plenty of power, but I want to take some long trips and would like to knock down my highway rpms. My question is, will a set of 3.00 gears be too high? I don't mind losing a little take off in exchange for faster highway speeds and lower cruising rpms.

What is your wheel size? Assuming you have a 25.5" wheel, @ 65 mph you will be spinning around 2700 w/ 3:1 gears.

A 2.7:1 gear would take that to around 2450. Right now you are running around 3150 @ 65

3:1 may be a good compromise, but if long range cruising is the plan the 2.7 gear maybe the best for highway and fuel economy. Also you could keep the 3.5 3rd member, and swap in a 2.7 member when you are going to take a long road trip.

26.5" would drop those numbers above a bit.

Thanks. Seth. I think ill look for a 3.00 ratio for a good balance of acceleration and cruising.

I had 3.00's in my truck when I bought it and I drove it up from Orange County just fine but I put in 3.55's and they seem to work just great.
You cant go wrong with the 3.00

Mine has 3.00 and I'll be running a C4 with a 302. Not really into fast acceleration off the line at my age, just want a nice cruiser. 9" gears are easy to change if I end up going through another childhood/midlife crises.
