Chevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van Empty Chevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van

Post by Chevboner Wed Dec 10, 2014 6:35 pm

Well, since I finally sold my GREEN 1965 Sportvan, I figured its time to start a new thread for the newest van Ive acquired.

Meet Jeff (left) the new owner of my old Sportvan. he's from Northern Wisconsin. I told him about the site. Hopefully he joins us

It all started one day at Taz's Van fest just a couple months ago. I finally got to meet a fellow Vanner named Rich, who lives near me. He was kind enough to invite me over one day to his house to talk vans and show off what we both have. Rich's most recent purchase was a van from ebay, that was listed in Chicago. Rich had this van for about two months. After hanging out for an hour or two and checking out his vans and mine, I had to ask Rich the million dollar question…. Will you sell me the red one? A bit shocked he had to think for a second. A few days later I got to pick up my new van. It's a 1965 Chevy van with dealer installed glass. The van is pretty much all original and untouched. 230 motor and a powerglide transmission. The interior even has the original washer fluid bag on the inner fire wall. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask to buy this van, and I sure am glad I didn't! Heres just a couple pics for now.

So as for my Van Plans, a little story to make sense of what I'm planing to do. So back in oohhh 1913 my Great Grandfather stated our family business called ALLEN TILING CO. In Chicago, Back then the biggest tiling company in Chicago, and in the nation at one time. My dad was the last one to run the company until 1996 when he closed the doors, do to slow business. I was lucky enough to share the family business experience with my old man before he closed it. Anyways they had a fleet of work truck…. Obviously. Here are a few Pics
    Chevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van Img_0010
    Chevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van Img_0011

The blue international is the last truck we owned, and the one i rode around in with my Dad. Baby blue and gold were the company colors.

Now back to my Van plans. I plan to reserve the all original untouched interior of my van. Clean up and go thru engine and trans. Body work, straighten everything out and patch the bad, the right way. Powder coat everything underneath. Because my buddy is cheap and does good powder coating. Upgrade to Disc brakes for safety.

Straight stock for me thats the way I like it, uh huh uh huh.

UNFORTUNATELY the "Dealer installed glass" will have to go. Because it will not work with my plans Sad I hate to do it but I have to. I already have the glass listed for sale. https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/t45389-window-glass

I know the truck was a custom blue paint, not sure what exactly the color is called but we'll go with baby blue. The lettering is gold leaf flake. Hard to see in the picture but its pretty bad ass if you know how it looks. If I can figure out how to photo shop it ill post a pic. But for now you'll just have to picture it in your head.

Comiskey Field, the White Sox park was right near the stockyards,,,,,,,,in my area,,,,,,however, my hero was Ron Santo,,,,,,,and that would make me a Cubs fan,,,,,,,,,I surely thought that 2008 would of been the year the Cubs would win the World Series, since it's been a 100 years,,,,,,,and now we head towards  the  200 year mark ,,,,,,,,

Baby blue is a nice color. Its the color of my 3rd gen. G20. In 1976 Chevrolet called it Sky Blue.

Thanks everyone! I'm pretty eager to start working on it, but it most likely won't be until spring time that work starts.

Donivan, Heres a twist for you…

I have the 6 slot grille
    A folding front passenger seat
    2 dog house clips
    Only 1 sun visor (option?)
And (appears to be original paint) A Chevy blue motor

How about that chevy blue? Did any 64-66 chevy Van come with a blue motor?

I've been scratching to pain one GM blue for some odd reason.

The vans came with 3 different engines, the 153, 194, and 230,,,,,,,,and we usually put a newer 250 in them when the original ones wear out,,,,,,,do you have the tag below the lower drivers door hinge that tells you what engines came in the van,,,,I don't know what color the original engine was,,,could be green also,,,,,,,

so there you go,,,,,,,it says the GVW is 4500 pounds, which basically means what the weight the tires will carry,,, ,,,,the van came with the 4 cylinder 153 cu in or the 6 cylinder 230 cu in engine when it was new,,,,but things get changed after 50 years,,,,,I see some of what you people back east call Patina,,,,,we call it rust out here.....

Got a chance to clean out the van a little bit yesterday. Found 2 original door pins, but these home made ones that were already in there are pretty cool.Chevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van Img_5610

Also found these two brackets. Right one looks like something for the trans, but puzzled about the one on the left. Is it supposed to be bent like that? also where do they go? lolChevbone's newest 1965 Chevy Van Img_5611

hahah patina. yeah don, unfortunately, people out here decided that patina is so popular out here that people fake it and ruin their vehicles on purpose. i'm just too poor and garageless to take care of mine yet. i cant wait till i get out to your side of the country and see what mine used to look like.

Finally found a clean and straight roof for my van. Vanfool hooked me up with this whole van, so I'm also going to use the good sheet metal to fill in windows on my van. Also using the corners for patches.

The past couple of weeks Ive started to clean up the garage and also clean out the van. So far I've pulled out all the wiring and gutted the dash/cab area. I forgot to take before pictures but it was all original untouched
