electronic speedo and tack

Post by dougtappan on Tue Nov 29, 2016 4:17 pm

Hey all, I would like to install electronic speed and tack in my 67. I know i've seen it done but a search came up with nothing. I have already installed all my engine gauges in the old radio opening so I would like too put an electronic speedo and take in the old dash locaation. Anyone know the guy who has already done it?

There is a moduel you get and a unit you attach to the trans speedo drive if your trans is older.

The cool thing is you can change rear gears or tire size and then you drive down the road with a hand held push button switch temporarily connected to the module and with a passanger hold a GPS telling you your true speed you use the push button to electronically trim the speedo to make it accurate. No calculating and changing speedo gears any more.

Something has been niggling at me and maybe this is a good place to bring it up. I have a "modern" rear axle (Ford 8.8" with disc brakes) I have been wanting to swap in. Could I use the ABS sensor on the rear axle to drive an electronic speedometer? Not a hijack, just something I been wondering about and it might help Doug.
Thanks,
Jim

I've tried to research the same question and kept hitting dead ends......In my case, I wanted that signal generator to talk to the 91 GM TBI ECM instead of the stock VSS driven by gears from the trans because I wanted to connect a speedo cable there (700r4).....

What I found in my research is that while electronic speed sensors work about the same, they are different per application in frequency output..... In my case, the 91 wagon posi I intend to use has a vss for the Bosch ABS system. Literally no chance I'd get lucky and it would speak the ECM's language, so I've got my eye on a "police car" VSS that also has a cable output..

If I was spec'ing an aftermarket electronic speedo, I'd likely just buy the prescribed VSS to eliminate a potential warranty fight......
