flexplate / flywheel questions- how many teeth ? Empty flexplate / flywheel questions- how many teeth ?

So... My 66 E. 6cyl 240 Falcon Club Wagon Deluxe is in need of a new flexplate. I have been searching Rockauto.com someone here lead me too. The flexplates they offer for my year say they have 164 teeth, mine has 168 - and yes I recounted like 5 times.

I checked 65 ,66,67 years under both club wagon and Econoline, same 164 teeth for all.

I think 164 is standard for 240/300's but it seems like I've heard of this before. Do a search of the 240/300 forum at the fordsix forums or ask there if you can't find the answer. My guess is that you should use a 164 and replaced the starter as well if need be, but I don't know.

the guys rebuilding my engine couldn't find 1 ford from 62-69 that used anything other than a 164 tooth flex plate, all engines all sizes all models with that drive train.

WTF - somebodys done some fooling around under there, my plate has a ford stamp on it

I did a lil googlin' last night and you are not alone my friend. What I'd like to know is if the circumference for the 168 and the 164 is the same? I think the solution probably is to buy the starter with the flexplate if need be. From what I gathered in my breif query, the 168 ford flexplate(and flywheel w/11" clutch) is obsolete, replaced by the 164

Hey Seth, yes the circumference is the same 14.23 " if Im not mistaking. Im wondering if someone replaced the starter with the wrong one and that's why half the teeth are gone.

So, if the 168 tooth plate became obsolete, all the parts catalogs would have been printed after they became obsolete. therefore referencing the 164 to every ford that had the 168. this would seem a bit strange that no one has had this issue yet.

I understand that I can just order the 164 and get a new starter to match- but I would still like to know if the 168 was a factory item installed originally on the van.

The 164 is Ford's replacement for the 168 tooth flywheel. Goes on with no problems. Same starter works with both.
