    Alternator/wiring Empty Alternator/wiring

    Post by Chroma66 Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:37 pm

Over the past year my wipers, heater, and radio have gone out. I noticed the wires to the voltage regulator were snapped off at the connector. Could this be the problem?  I got a new connector, and then saw that the red V wire is the only one connected to anything. The  terminals on my alternator have been sealed off. Here's a "schematic". Sorry about the crappy Paint drawing:

That's right, the F wire and the L  wire are attached to each other. But to nothing else (wiring harness connector is disconnected). Another mystery.

    The alternator:

I can easily reattach wires F and R to alternator, but I figure the terminals were blocked for a reason, which I should probably know before I proceed. Thank you, as always, for the wisdom. Hope I got the right labels on everything; feel free to ask!

That alternator has the voltage regulator built in,,,,,,,does it charge when you put a voltmeter on its output terminal and
run the engine?  It could be a REAL 1 wire hot rod alternator,,,,the 3rd Gen set up we use is this to get rid of the old alternator, wiring and voltage regulator,,,,,,,

It looks like the output is @ 18DCV from the nut on the B terminal to the frame of the car.

#2 is the sensing line,,,,,it watches the voltage output and tells the regulator in the alternator to keep the voltage at 14.5 volts,,,,,otherwise the alternator runs wild,,,,,,,,,#1 turns the regulator on,,,,,,,and we use the old #4 wire from the old regulator, which is the idiot light, to do the job,,,,,
do you still have other electrical problems?

Yes, the windshield wipers still are not working tho the linkage seems to be fine (not moving). The heater doesn't work, although I removed the the distributor and defroster ducts and something-I believe it's the resistor- is unattached. The radio is removed, but the speakers are still attached. The headlights and signal lights work.

the resistor turns on the fan motor,,,,,,,the heater switch sends juice to the resistor,,,,stick a paper clip or something  in the resistor connector  to connect the motor wire to one of the wires to see if the motor works,,,,,,check the connector on the wiper motor above the gas pedal, one wire needs juice when you turn the key on,,,,,,the other goes to the switch which is the ground,,,,,,see what you got,,,,,,,

Cool. I took a look awhile back but only the wires. Will do and update this afternoon.

Finally got a chance to look and so far what I have RE: winshield wiper motor: the only thing getting current is the 20Y wire attached to the wiper motor  (#2 in the first picture). On the schematic it looks like it goes to some sort of holder/fuse panel (circled in photo 2). but in my car it goes to a bundle of taped up wires so it is difficult to see where it actually goes. I do not recognize this thing in photo #2 on the diagram, on my car. Thanks for the help!

The mystery wire holder is the fuse box with the wires going into it from behind i guess? Man, mine looks different!

do you have a 2 speed motor or a windshield washer pump,,,,,,,,are you having problems,,,,,,the yellow wire is juice from the ignition switch through the fuse box,,,,,,,the light blue is what turns the wipers on,,,,,,,,,it is the ground,,,,,,another wire to the pump on the switch is also a ground,,,,,those are negative wires,,,,see what you got,,,,,,see that the switch is sending negative signals to the motor and juice is getting to the yellow wires to test the wiring,,,,,,

Here it is, 5045500 Type  E Delco 2 Speed.

Think I found the other ground-a black wire looking like it goes to/from the top of the pump (wire #1 in the picture) to the wiper switch. All I can tell you right now is that there's no power to the other yellow and the dark blue wires, not with the car running and the wiper switch turned on. Not sure I understand your question, so I hope this helps.

My distributor was sparking the other day-maybe that has something to do with all these electrical problems.

you said last year your equipment went out,,,,,,,,is it still out,,,,,,,,you need power,,,,,,the yellow wire is the power,,,,,,the other wires on the switch turn the wipers and the washer on,,,,,,so what kind of fuse box do you have,,,,,the stock one or something else,,,,,,,,if the wipers dont work, put some power to the yellow terminal and see if they work
